Did you miss me? Just back from two magical weeks in Cornwall. Ended up in Treen, a little hamlet near Porthcurno, which had the most amazing beach I have ever seen in the UK. Beautiful turquoise water, clean white sand, hardly any people. Time seemed to stand still. I swam in the sea with mackerel and sea bass round my feet, we saw seals and dolphins, badgers, buzzards and an adder. We walked the coastal path from Lands End, dropping down into deserted little coves and fishing harbours. We ate seaweed and mint picked from the hedgerows and drank elderflower champagne made by a seasoned forager. We saw The Grapes of Wrath at the Minack theatre, with the rain pounding against our faces, with my boys open mouthed in shock at the final heart-breaking scene. On the trip down, we visited a foodbank (the place is wildly beautiful but really poor) and had a cup of tea at a ‘shanty town’ of tents, housing kids working for the minimum wage in cafés and restaurants where David Cameron takes his ‘staycation’. How the other half holidays.
All being equal, I just fell in love with the place. Hook, line and sinker. We are all freckly and brown and are missing the sea – no more sand in our shoes or salt on our lips. We feel like we’ve been away for months and the life in the real world all seems a bit colourless and too frantic.
Sure that things will be back to normal in a week or so but had such a lovely time. Thank you to all that suggested places to go and see. Xxxxx
