Ey up. It's such a long time since I last posted here but thought I'd let you know about a bunch of gigs that the cowboys are doing in March. We've got some cracking guests lined up (many Hawley board favourites like Neil McSweeney and Carwyn 'Colorama' Ellis) and we will in fact be doing more gigs in March than we have done in a year for the last decade. Hell, we even rehearsed on Monday, first time in 25 years. Hope some of you can make it down, here's the link to all the info.

For those who don't do facebook. Here's the all the info

The Lonesome & Penniless Cowboys, probably the best band you've never seen are back .
In the dark and dismal early 80's, before you were born and when Britain was still in black and white, 3 men had a vision, a dream and indeed a calling. Somehow The Thin Man, Clive Mellor and Mog decided it was their life's vocation to make people love country music. Before Alt Country, before New Country before Americana and before a million hipsters wore Johnny Cash T shirts The Lonesome & Penniless Cowboys were formed just to let people know the truth. Hank Williams, George Jones, Gram Parsons, The Louvins etc had a body of work that any one with a heart, a soul and a hard luck story would love. Turned out the plan worked and after turning Chorlton Irish Club into a regular venue and packing it out every week the cowboys' reputation and alongside it the love of country music in the North West grew.
The Cowboys more or less called it a day in the 90's but realised that they enjoyed each other's company and the joy that came ( to them and audiences) from bashing out their unique blend of Country, Cajun and Western Swing so occasional gigs were played, often more by accident than design.
In the last decade the Cowboys have played an average of 4 gigs a year, but, as none of us are getting any younger and having narrowly missed the end of the world twice in recent times. They've decided to up the ante and play at least 6 gigs a year. The first 5 of these will be at The Kings Arms in March.

The Cowboys will have special guests performing in their own right and also some surprise guests playing and singing with the band.

These will be

3rd March Carwyn Ellis (Colorama acoustic set) and Stuart Warburton

10th March Gabriel Minnikin & The Fast Country and Walton Hesse

17th March. Aidan Smith and Mike Greaves

24th March. Quiet Loner and Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers

31st March Ross Thompson (Blind Atlas acoustic set) and Neil McSweeney

Admission £6.00 including free bowl of Chilli for first 50 people

Doors 7pm
1st set 7.30
Live music will finish at 10.30 as it's a school night.
Bar will close at

Sundays in March. Hotter than the Sun . Cooler than than a hipster sucking an ice pop.

"They may well be penniless, but whilst they continue to play some of the most joyful, energetic and downright danceable Western swing in the UK they won't ever be lonely."
Larry Gott (James)

'People still talk about the Beatles residency at Hamburgs Star Club... Ditto the Velvet Underground regular as clock work engagements at Max's Kansas City!? Me? I'm still talking about the Lonesome & Penniless Cowboys residency at the Kings Arms Salford....AND IT'S NOT EVEN STARTED YET!!!'
Marc Riley (6 Music)

'These Cowboys may be lonesome and penniless but they are rich in spirit and ways of rockin a tune that will always win them friends worldwide - their take on country classics brings a toe tappin good vibe all the way from Memphis via the M60 - a great night out, guaranteed to leave you with a smile in your face and a song in your heart'
Scott Carey (Paris Angels/Radio Republic )

' Many folk felt that Country music died with the passing of Patsy Cline or that old country schmoozer Jim Reeves. Others thought that the more recent passings of Mr Cash and Kitty Wells spelt the end. Beyond those gravestones and fare thee wells were another breed. A breed they called the Lonesome, the Penniless, the Cowboys. They make music that keeps Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson sleeping on their backs with one eye open.'
Paul Heaton (Songwriter)

' Would you like a Jamesons ? ' Tom Baker (Timelord)

You won't find me there as ALL Fm is strictly analogue and only available in the Manchester area on 96.9 fm.

However we're not complete luddites and you can listen online at http://www.allfm.org and if you have a couple of hundred hours to kill there's an archive here http://www.mixcloud.com/SITSOL/

For any other info on the show, there's a facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Standing- ... 1021407698

We've got some pretty good guests booked in for March at the moment including Dave Harding from Richmond Fontaine and Rebecca Pronsky who's guitarist Richard Bennett is a master of twang.

well this is fun !
stunning solo set from Carwyn on the first week, what a star! excellently supported by Stuart.

and this previous weekend's gonna be one for the scrapbooks, two of manc's top bands supporting. Walton Hesse even learnt a country tune for the night.

Gabe is leaving us for his Canadian homeland so something of a farewell gig for him, a cracking spot from him and his band, and that nice lass Jo turned up from First Aid Kit to add a sweet sweet harmony or two to his set, mmmmmmmm.

the cowboys last set was augmented by the wonderful Chris Hillman (no, not that one) on pedal steel. He was chuffed cos he never gets to play proper country and got to use some pedals he hardly touches. Brilliant he said, I'd sit in next week too, but I'm off round America with billy bragg next week. Bugger.

Is there no end to the talent on show here ?

You'll have to turn up next week to find out..........

(aidan is top by the way, and mike greaves has written a few things the beautiful south covered)

If you're anywhere near the Manchester/Salford border this evening, it's your last chance to catch us before we go and have a lie down for a few months.
