As a result of lifting heavy boards and stuff in a part time job I do, I have had a groin hernia for nearly two years, that I have lived with Ok, but has recently got worse.

So a few weks ago, I saw the surgeons and they gave me an op date of 23rd June!

Apparently they will do it as a day case, put me to sllep, open me up, push it all back in, put some kind of mesh in there, stitch me up, wake me up, make sure I can walk, pee and eat, then send me home. With some strong painkillers.

Getting a bit apprehensive as the time nears, I have had worse surgery a dozen or so years ago, but the memory fades.

Anyone else had to have one of these? :?:

I'd love to hear your experiences.

Docs say recovery is 4 - 6 weeks till feeling reasonable, then a good few months to get 100%.

I hope they fix me up like they do Premiership footballers who get them

My other half had a hernia op a couple of years back as did my boy – he was born with one. My son's hernia was inguinal (in his bollocks to you and me) and my blokeys was in his stomach. I think my other half was up and about in a couple of weeks and felt right as rain after a month. But seems I had both my kids with a c-section, I sort of took it for granted that he'd just get on with it! Doesn't mean I was short of sympathy... I'm just not a very good nursemaid. On reflection, this is a bit of a shit answer mate, sorry... x

My dad had the same op some years ago and it went very well. His initial
recovery seemed to be very quick as I remember. He did have to take
it easy for a few months after.

As for me, only op was a vasectomy with local anesthetic.......second cut
they had to scrape me off the ceiling!! :pale:

That isn't going to help is it!!

Hope all goes well......beer always helps! :BEEEER :thumright:

Egg,

I had the snip about 8 years ago under local, didnt feel owt during the op apart from being tugged about, but it ached for a good week afterwards and ended up with swollen bits for about a fortnight.

I have heard that one of the rareish side effects of the surgery is swollen parts for a while, but not always.

Then again one of my wifes friends is a farmer. He had the op late on a Thursday, and was back driving a tractor and herding cattle by the Monday after.

I think I'll be very sore for some days after, so I hope they give me some good painkillers to take home.

And I dont think I'll be lifting any heavy amps for a long while, if not ever again

And with the "no lifting over 8-10lbs" rule for the first few weeks, I guess I'll put away my Teles for a while and play these

You have to stop fearing the worst, take note that for every op that goes a bit wrong hundreds if not thousands go right.

Just remember after the op to obey the rules and not try and run before you can walk.

And of course make the most of the few days you absolutely must rest up and let the family wait on you hand and foot.

I've heard that 'don't lift anything heavier than a kettle' rule & was told by a medical practitioner that it's rubbish, Just don't go lifting the wardrobe & pushing the car. You'll know what feels too much. Just be sensible.

My uncle had a hernia op last year. He's 79 and was back playing golf after two months of taking it easy. I'm sure you will be fine :thumright:

Had a pre-op the other day and was reassured somewhat. Ward Sister said that though I had been told they cant do keyhole on me, the cut they make in the open op is not that much bigger than the combined ones that they do for the keyhole. Plus keyhole goes all the way through with more risks of damage to internal etc, whereas the open one goes through the top layer of skin and muscle only.

Said that the hospital send you home with 5 days worth of painkillers, and she would bet that I only used half of them.

I hope shes right.

Mind you the ward I am being sent home from that same day is up a flight of stairs and a looooong walk from the car park, where my wife will be parking to pick me up.

Dont even have to starve myself either. In at noon, can eat well till midnight, they encourage you to have a light breakfast at 7.30am, then drink black tea or clear stuff till 11am. Not beer though.

Plan to do more of that when I am recuperating, if I can with the pain meds I am on.

Weekend after is a great TV one. Wimbledon and Glasters.

And my family waiting on me hand and foot.

Payback time
 :?:

Hmmm.

7 days post op, it was somewhere between the two to be honest.

Took all the painkilers for the first two days, then day 3 cut out the ones I couldnt drink on.

Hospital told me to stay at home 1st day, the short walks from day two, with a little bit more each day.

Which I did.

Then everything started swelling up, groin, stitches, everything. Going down now but pretty dramatic and sore.

Went to my own GP yesterday and she said I was overdoing it!!!

I told her I was just doing what the hospital said!!!!!?????

Spent yesterday taking it easier, same today. Have this odd feeling as if my guts are pressing under the stitches, feels sort of warm and itchy. Especially just after eating.

So right now I am just lying on the sofa, going on forums and watching the tennis.

Hopefully I'll be more up and running by next week, when I see the docs again
