...... shown on BBC2 TV 6.30pm every weekday evening.

I'm finding this series really interesting. Presented by Michael Portillo who travels on older UK railway routes following the original George Bradshaw guides from the 1840s. Along the way he visits places of interest mentioned by Bradshaw and investigates how these places - and the lives of the local folk - have changed over the intervening 170 years.

This week his route has taken him through Yorkshire, visiting Whitby, York, Harrogate and Sheffield among others. Last night he travelled from Batley to Sheffield and featured 'shoddy' cloth manufacture in Batley, rhubarb growing and hand made knife (of the Bowie knife type) manufacture in Sheffield.

Just thought that, particularly, this week's programmes in the series may be of interest to many on here. You can still catch them on BBC Iplayer.

I fully agree this is a smashing series , i saw all of the 1st series ( mainly on the i player ) and am currently working my way thru the present series ,again on the i player, and it pains me to say it , but i quite like Portillo in it , which says a lot for me as i have no time for any Tory polititions at all .

I agree this is a really interesting programme. I watched the other week where it featured North Wales .... Llandudno looks like it may feature on one of our future trips south.
