cool photo Dave
yes 20 years ago, tons of black velvet, 5 am , and absolutely, Eoin, fucking expensive.
haven t been regulary to bars in Paris for yonks but ONE address, for food and wine before you hit the bars or else is:
"L'ami Pierre"
not mentioned in any or very few restaurant guides.
small old style restaurant/bistro
Pierre was a dude, a "guerisseur" who would heal, a bit like an old style chiropractor) people, (well punters), in the back room of the restaurant sometimes early in the previous century. hence the name.
The restaurant was bought during the seventies by the
eternal and late
Coluche, one of the funniest and greatest french bloke EVER.
for a long long time (well all the time i went there), it was run by the lovely Marie Joe (our Barbara).
You d step in and order a round while you wait for a table and get a plate of the BEST saucisson on the planet complimentary.
3 plats du jour to choose from, and that s it.
but the heartiest, simplest, tastiest french classics.
amazing and pantagruelic Charcuterie or Cheese plateaux as well.
the walls
covered in bottles of wine
with simple names and prices on small slate and chalk boards.
(some rotating paintings as well)
One typical parisian waitress working her ass off but remaining charming.
authentic crowd. priceless.
marie joe behind the zinc curved "comptoir" (counter/bar) playing cards and serving you a good double complimentary great calvados on your way out.
i heard Marie Joe's retired now, but the vibe s still there
take it from me. an authentic, unique, simple and rare french place.
