"machine gun" is much more industrial and stripped down from the earlier stuff. I don't think it is just a repeat of what they've done before at all.

oh, and beth gibbons is the sexiest woman who ever walked God's green earth. 8)

You're wrong.

Lou Rhodes and Winona Ryder are the sexiest women ever to walk God's green earth.

Fact!

i quite agree, the LSP's music is OK yes (i'm not a fan at all), but simply being inspired by a particular musical figure does not automatically imply that you are in any way near as good as them.

I'm loving the album, but it's not Scott Walker. There is a subtle influence in there from him though. One assumes their PR people sent some blurb out with the promos saying they had been listening to Scott etc. and that has formed the basis of the reviews.

Sounds more like the Coral in some places than anything.

I love it, but in some places it just strikes me that they've just used strings for strings sake, and it takes away from some of the songs.

I felt that too, using strings sections, mainly because they sound "nice", but they feel wrong in the context of the songs. For Example LOVE and Tindersticks, they know exactly were and how to drop a good strings section effortlessly, without sounding out of context.

and this is arguably one of the crimes and cardinal sins in music and songwriting - never say something with twenty instruments when one will do the job just as well.
