So, son number one is doing uni open days. Choice of uni has to be a. the right course b. within occasional home game distance of Spurs. It so happens that Sheffield is scoring big on the academia but is it close enough for home game travel? Discuss...

I have ex-Sheffield now-London friends who support Sheffield Wednesday who frequently go to games so being in Sheffield and heading to London matches should be feasible - two hours on the train, tickets bought in advance are pretty cheap (there must be a student travelcard which is worth investing in).

Thanks Denise. And has the added advantage that Maggie will give him his tea every now and again if he runs out of money...xxxxxx

I am probably biased but Sheffield is a great city for students. Anyone I know who has been to uni here has loved it and many have stayed (sorry!). The station is right in the centre and there is a lot of student accommodation with more being built. It feels a safe, friendly city too. There are brilliant sports facilities and if he misses Spurs he could always come to Hillsborough to see what football looks like in the championship (for another year at least :( ). The best thing is for him to go to visit the ones with the courses that suit him so he can get a feel for the place. Good luck to him! x

Son number 1 has open day in a few weeks. Where can we go that's nice to get our tea?

My son has his head set on Sheffield, based on the number of trees and proximity to surf-able beaches, walkable hills and just about being able to make Spurs home games.

The course is also good, with high student satisfaction and reasonable salaries when students finished.

Looks like you and Maggie need to get your gin heads on for when I come visit. xxxx

Stoke's a similar distance from London/Wembley to Sheffield - my mate from school is a Spurs' season ticket holder. If there's a direct train service, then it's just the cost that's the issue.

That's useful to know. He has discounted anything north of Manchester and anything west of Bristol. Wales is out of the question. And Belfast? You are having a laugh.

He's been on the WHL season ticket waiting list since he was four. Shit like this matters. x

So, my boy loved Sheffield. We both thought it proper handsome. The course sounded fab, he loved the sports, the halls are alright for smelly students and the hills and trees and lovely roads were, well, lovely.

We have rainy Manchester to see and a couple of others but he may be sold.

Only disappointment was that not one person called me flower. I mean, if you come to London, we will call you c**t. Up your game, you lot. You have stereotypes to live up to. x

So, we have an offer and up in April for another open day. Tips for a couple of fab places while we're here?

Eats like a pig, my son, despite there being nothing of him. Do they serve Billy Bunter dinners?

Think it was the 38 sports on campus and the hills and trees that were the clinchers.
