Went to see the film in Liverpool on Saturday - serious, thought-provoking drama. There’s an oxymoronic theme running throughout the film, from the title to how the titular character deals with life’s pain and joy. Don’t want to sound too pseudish, but it reminded me of the Samuel Beckett idea that all life is pain and we do stuff to shut out that pain. There are lots of taboos put out there in the film and I guess there will be some critics who fail to grasp the varied reasons why that is. Maxine Peake is tremendous - I’ve already seen a quotation from one review that says that the film is her “Raging Bull” and that’s no easy clickbait comparison - she really is that good. In some ways this is very much in the tradition of the 60s kitchen sink dramas like “A kind of loving” - only much stronger and more powerful. I was expecting a good film - it’s a great one.
Really looking forward to seeing this, now. Beckett in the Kitchen Sink - sounds like they made it just for me!
