I was listening to the Drive By Truckers the other day, and this line got me thinking:

Mr. Phillips never said anything behind nobody's back
Like "Dammit Elvis, don't he know, he ain't no Johnny Cash

Many claim Elvis as The King, but who really was 'the man'?

it'll always be johnny cash for me but that is a personal decision - not saying that one is better than the other because they were and are still both hugely influential.

I think they are both great - Johnny is the 'MAN' and Elvis is the 'KING' to me.

Thankyou Luke,

I have to admit I am a die hard Elvis fan(did the Graceland bit) but Johnny Cash was a huge talent - what a voice and yes the 'MAN' presence!! - Loved that film 'Walk the Line'.

I thought it was a terrible, terrible film, but on the basis that Elvis is little more than the equivalent of a modern day Pop Idol, it's Cash all the way...

indeed so - a man who defines "cool": I love that record company poster advertising the last American Recordings album - "we'd like to recommend something in black" 8)

Johnny Cash had a good voice - but it didn't have the strength and range that Elvis had - and their styles differed too, despite the fact that they both had the same gospel and country background and interests and came from the same stable.

Elvis admired Johnny so much that he covered A Thing Called Love - in an identical style. Johnny Cash only gets a single point in my book though cos he managed to star in a Columbo episode!

As Hissyt says its a matter of personal preference because their careers were completely different.

Definitely Elvis! 8)
