As a 40 yr old American, i cannot remember a day without him. Truly gutted :(

RIP. I first found him through the Traveling Wilburys (which, in turn, I found through Roy Orbison), but afterwards I got to listen to many of his songs.

I didn't know much about Tom Petty's music until the Travelling Wilburys either but I also discovered he was a huge fan of The Zombies last year. He wrote the forward in a book produced last year to celebrate the 50 years of their Album "Odessey & Oracle". The Album bombed everywhere and the group split but two years later "Time of the Season" became a huge hit in the US and the album went on became a cult classic ranked 100 in Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" commonly compared other albums of that area i.e. Sargent Pepper and Pet Sounds.

Tom's version of "I Want You Back Again" is excellent.
