Sunday March 2nd quite fittingly sees our second Americana Night at it's new home of The Grapes. Once again we welcome friends old and new, and don't forget between acts you can treat your ears to a fine mix of the likes of Justin Rutledge, Richmond Fontaine, Kathleen Edwards, Wilco and The National. Doors open 8pm and entry is just £3. On the bill this month:

The Silver Tree Club

From Leeds, The Silver Tree Club were formally known as The Tenderloin, and have proved to be one of the biggest hits from our previous shows with their explosive sets. They were originally put together about six years ago by Nick Wallace (piano and vocals), Mike Hurst (accordion, Rhodes and vocals) and Dave Bertram (guitar and vocals). Dave came up with the name Tenderloin after a district of his native San Francisco. Nick and Mike continued with the name back in West Yorkshire and continued to write play and perform in the area. Although Nick is the only original member of what was The Tenderloin they continued to evolve with drummer Ged Crefin and guitarist Don Mort being long standing members. The line up is completed by Scottish singer/songwriter Neil McLarty who had been performing bass duties.

So what do the Silver Tree Club sound like? How about something that builds gently from piano driven ballads of a bitter sense of world weariness, through indiesque Americana into all out madness with a megaphone a theremin and pure energy that will leave your head spinning? It's something that will leave you drained, but raring to strap yourself in and go round all over again.

The Silver Tree Club have just released debut single Shakin' on Post Records (available on limited edition 7" vinyl from their MySpace page), but the experience of seeing that song on stage is something not to be missed.

"Stage presence ain't the half of it. The raw emotion expelled in 'It Must Be Hard' was frightening, and if there's a better way to finish any set than with the blistering 'Shakin'', well i ain't seen it yet...".

Quiet Loner

Quiet Loner's debut album "Secret Ruler Of The World" was released to widespread acclaim in summer 2004, spending two months as the number one album on Maverick magazine's Americana album chart and ending the year being voted best album of 2004 by the readers of americana-uk.com.

Quiet Loner is hinged around singer-songwriter Matt Hill, often accompanied by the remarkable pedal steel guitar playing of Alan Cook. Quiet Loner subvert traditional country and folk themes into modern day tales of urban life all set in a distinctly British landscape. In fact more than one reviewer has commented that Quiet Loner's peculiar take on the dark side of country music owes as much to Morrissey and Costello as it does to Johnny Cash and Gram Parsons.

As a solo, duo or band Quiet loner have shared stages with many great performers opening for acts like Lambchop, Joe Pernice, Josh Rouse, Chris Mills, Richard Buckner, Neko Case, Jackie Leven, Peter Bruntnell and Neal Casal.

"a real talent for songwriting plus some wonderful darker moments that you can't help but fall in love with" Maverick magazine

"echoes disparate bedfellows such as Gram parsons and Elvis Costello - four stars" Classic Rock magazine

Ben Stevenson

Ben Stevenson proved to be something of a revelation when he appeared at West Street Live for us recently. A Folkie troubadour whose heartfelt laments belie his tender years.

Raised on the classic rock of Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd and Lynyrd Skynyrd then later discovering Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley and English folk guitarists, Ben's music is open to influence from anywhere. As a sideman he has played in a variety of bands ranging from heavy rock to ska-punk and funk before settling with his passion for song writing. From his earliest bands Ben has always sought to develop his song writing skills. His sound features stripped down acoustic guitar with a laid back yet powerful voice singing honest narrative reflections.
