...and then I went to Oberhausen in Germany (near Dusseldorf) to photograph the Static Roots festival on behalf of my friend Dietmar Leibecke, who's the organiser. Cracking weekend with Irish, Scottish, German and English folks.

Next up I was attending/supporting/photographing an EP launch gig by local lass Emily Lockett - very much a Taylor Swift influenced pop country performer, but she does it well and has a top notch young band, all straight out of university.

Then it was a visit to the Sugarmill in Stoke with some old schoolmates who I hadn't seen in ages to catch Stiff Little Fingers. They (SLF) still have the fire in their bellies, even if their set is a well-oiled machine by now. A nostalgic night all round and traditionally as ever it was me who ended up giving my pisshead mates a lift home...

The Leadmill! Bloody brilliant! Best front of house sound I've heard anywhere in yonks and incredible atmosphere. Gutted I couldn't do the Thursday and Friday as I'm photographing a Cajun & Zydeco festival in Shropshire. Some of my favourite photos from the two nights:

I was on photo duty for my friends over at the North Shropshire Big Weekend - a largely Cajun & Zydeco event that takes place in a village hall in the middle of nowhere, but which attracts the biggest Louisiana/Texas names in Cajun and Zydeco music, who play backed by a pickup band from this side of the pond. This year, Blake Miller (Revellers, Pine Leaf Boys, Old Fashioned Aces) and Amelia Biere (Old Fashioned Aces), Ruben Moreno (Zydeco accordionist out of Houston Texas) and Desiree Champagne from Louisana were the US headliners. From elsewhere there were Ireland's youthful Barcelo Brothers and non-Cajun/Zydeco acts like Truckstop Honeymoon, Bakerfield, Razor Hollar and the pre-teen Sugar Donuts. Ridiculously hot weather, but a fantastic weekend.

Five days of live music in a row. First it was The Long Road Festival, where I was photographing for the Rocking Magpie website and Americana UK. Friday's bill was a bit too bro-country for me, but Saturday and Sunday were excellent.

Then on the Monday I left my hotel and dropped off a mate at Rugby station, drove back home to Stoke, got changed, drove to Crewe and caught the train to Manchester and met up with two mates from Morecambe - and Marseilles - to go and see Whitney Rose at the Rose and Monkey in the Northern Quarter.

Back home again - the gig finished early and I was up the next day to go and get the keys to the church for the Andrew Combs/Malin Pettersen gig that we (Biddulph Up In Arms) were promoting. Superb gig, got home around 1.30am after helping Shaun the sound guy get his gear into his van.

Prior to a month travelling around a bit of France and a lot of Germany, I caught up with a twice postponed gig by The Mavericks in Bath

The following night i was staying over in London as i was catching the early Eurostar to Paris and a friend posted on Facebook that she had a spare for the Mavericks in Hammersmith - and did anyone want it - for free - so I went to see them again. Particularly liked the support act McKinley James (son of jason Smay, drummer with JD McPherson - who was drumming in his son's band) - very much like the early Blasters with even more soul.

Then after a one night stop over in Paris, I landed in Marseilles and met up with friend jean-Michel Iacono who'd co-promoted the last gig on the Whitney Rose EU/UK tour, at Le Molotov. Whitney's dad and step-mum who were on holiday in Europe turned up to surprise her, but not before we'd been the pub with them...support came from Marseillais tatto artist Johnny Barrell and his band.

Then it was a few days of cheap hotels and couch surfing before I ended up in Köln where i went with friend Regine to see a UK folk pop duo Stables, featuring one of the guys from Keston Cobblers Club.

Next up a German friend, Dietmar has gotten me a free ticket to see Counting Crows and then it's off to Hamburg where Jesper Lindell is playing.

Well, Dietmar came down with COVID and so I didn't get to see Counting Crows, but I did get to see Jesper Lindell play a tiny club in Hamburg to a total of 11 people...with a six piece band...they did a full hour of tightly-played country rock to that small but appreciative crowd and then disappeared into the dressing room to count their losses. Live music is struggling to find its way back everywhere it seems.

There was a better crowd the following night at KNUST, also in Hamburg, for the Oysterband, who were fulfilling a cancelled run of dates - the audience was around three quarters full, which was OK, but my German friends Jorg and Gundula who I was with said that they'd always played to sell-out crowds in the city before. Last time I'd seen the Oysterband was in Congleton Town Hall - and guitarist Alan Prosser played solo upstairs in the Biddulph Arms...

I then didn't get to see any live music for the next three weeks (I'm not counting the bloke with backing tapes singing Schlager Musik tunes at the Potato Festival in Busenberg). Got back from interrailing on Monday 10th October and then made the trip over to Kilkenny - a town I'm very familiar with, having played the Roots Festival trail for six years in a row from 2007 to 2013 and having played there out of festival season since - and visited the Roots Festival as a punter. Met up with friends on the Friday and managed to get a ticket in Cleere's for the sold-out return of local grunge-rock heroes Kerbdog.

Then it was about 100 yards down the road and up the hill to St Canice's Cathderal, a magnificent venue, with fabulous acoustics for the rearranged RH gig.

Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage in Biddulph was next. Absolutely lovely people - simple set up with one Ear Trumpet Labs mic, but they really knew how to use it - set it up with a tape measure in soundcheck!

I got a press and photo pass for the Charley Crockett gig in Manchester at the Deaf Institute and what a good one it was. Support Theo Lawrence was a young Marty Robbins reincarnated although he looked like the Fonz. He got a terrific response which bodes well for his forthcoming album, due out soon.

Went to the Netherlands to Groningen for the Take Root festival, an annual festival of Americana/Roots and indie music - Groningen is a great university city and easily accessible from Amsterdam. Unfortunately I failed to get a ticket for the Sheffield Pulp/RH gigs as I was coming through passport control when they went on sale and all had gone by the time I was able to log on, once on the train. Oh well.
The night before the festival, The Delines, supported by Belfast's Arborist played the same venue (it's a huge conference centre with several big halls and rooms inside - the Delines played the Binnenzaal). They stayed at our hotel too and we got to chat with guitarist and prize-winnng author Willie Vlautin and singer Amy Boone - nice folks.

The festival starts at 4pm and goes through to midnight - the only pain about the festival is that there's so much going on simultaneously - six different venues in one - that hard decisions about who to see have to be made. No gaps too, so you have to miss out on something to get fed and watered.

The biggest names on the bill in recent years have been Courtney Barnett and Father John Misty - not really in an Americana camp, but definitely appealing to a similar audience. I'd think that RH would be a perfect fit for this festival...

Last night we promoted Adam Holmes (aided by Jen Austin) at St Lawrence's in Biddulph. Tonight I'm off to see Jeffrey Foucault in Leek. Apparently in his rider, it gives instructions on how to pronounce his name ("Fo-Cult" for anyone who was wondering).
