Played a gig myself on Saturday night in Wem, got in at 1.30am and then got up at 2.45 to drive to Manchester airport to catch the 5.55am flight to Amsterdam, where I was seeing Kacey Musgraves. A very polished show, but her resemblance to Dylan the rabbit wasn't only confined to her flares. I think she'd enjoyed her time in the city - very chilled.

Well that was a pretty okay gig, we saw Bruce Welch in the bar beforehand so no surprise when he joined Duane on stage, by this time I'd also seen a certain person this forum is named after standing in the wings so again no surprise when Richard joined the guys on stage for a few numbers, towards the end Imelda May came on and the encore again featured Richard (if my video of that number came out I will You Tube it and link on here).

Next up for me was The Rubinoos supported by the Surfin' Lungs at the 100 Club - a venue that I hadn't been to before. It was pretty much everything I expected - subterranean, old fashioned and great on atmosphere. Both bands put on lively shows of what you'd probably generally categorise as power-pop -I didn't realise what great musicians and vocalists the Rubinoos were - they opened with a cover of "Mr Sandman" and went on to include a version of "Sheena is a punk rocker" in their set as well as busking an acapella version of "My Girl". A great, fun gig of old school pop and surf.

Another day, another gig - went to Manchester Apollo to see Kacey Musgraves again. A much bigger venue than the Melkweg in Amsterdam a couple of weeks back, so the stage show was bigger and Soccer Mommy, the support got to perform as a full band, as opposed to a Sophie Allison solo set. As ever, the security at the Apollo were heavy handed in stopping videoing and people standing in their seats to dance - until Kacey told a fib and said that security would let everyone do both as she hadn't requested bans on those things - she'd noticed their unsubtle tactics. She did make sure that she thanked the security later and was glad that a compromise had been reached...a Kacey Musgraves audience are hardly going to rip the place apart as I saw once at a Public Enemy show at the same venue...

Local gig at Biddulph Up In Arms tonight - Kim Richey and Ben Glover who I caught last month at the Nashville Underground (although I missed the bit where Mary Gauthier joined them)

Aye...remember the 'security' being ripped apart along with half the seats in the stalls at a Buzzcocks gig there...being posh punks we were seated in the circle...

Last gig for me was Vinnyy Peculiar @ Thornton Hough Club Heswall Wirral last Saturday...wanted to catch Vinny before I 'put him on' at Davenham Theatre in a few weeks...he was a bit weird nay peculiar, in a peaceful non threatening way; above all he was engaging, delightful and a good laugh...

...needless to say the next day when I was informed the upcoming gig would have to be 'put back' as Vinny had suffered a broken arm whilst out on a bike ride round Liverpool with some mates, I was a little disheartened...actually I was genuinely upset that such a nice guy had suffered the pain from such an injury...I must be going soft in my dotage.

...anyway he's happy to try again for Davenham come Saturday 16th March 2019.

Next gig is tonight Wishbone Ash @ Eleven Stoke on Trent - going back to my school days for one night only...

...nice venue for an acoustic gig - or tour warm up...capacity about 300 standing ...just saying for folks out there  ....it's been 11 years since The Sugarmill...

Kim Richey and Ben Glover at Biddulph Up In Arms were next - I've seen Kim several times, always supporting, so it was good to see her at least joint headlining. Thoughtful and melodic singer-songwriter material from her and Ben - and both really nice people too.

I also saw Roddy Frame on Friday night at Cadogan Hall and he was on top form musically coupled with some good banter with the audience between songs.

Set off early from home last Friday to fly to Amsterdam and then catch the train to Groningen for the Take Root Festival - an annual festival of roots, country and Americana music. Highlights for me were Alejandro Escovedo and Neko Case. I also caught sets by Trampled by Turtles, American Aquarium, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, John Moreland and Father John Misty:

After a mere 4 hours sleep I then got up and caught the 6.48am train to Schiphol in readiness to catch a morning flight to Glasgow, where Robbie Fulks, legendary Chicago singer-songwriter was rounding off an all too rare UK visit.

Then Monday it was another bus and then a flight back to Manchester Airport where I'd left my car...
