Post subject:  We Shall Overcome weekend

Better forumers than me are involved in the We Shall Overcome Weekend, namely Matt Hill, Craig and Maggie that I know about, but I have got involved in the Walthamstow one, which features a friend's band and lots of others.

The blurb from the website reads:

WHAT IS WE SHALL OVERCOME?
Over the weekend of 2nd/3rd/4th October hundreds of people will organise gigs and events around the country with the purpose of uniting in the face of a government whose agenda of austerity we oppose. The gigs are both a show of solidarity and a means to offer practical help to those affected by the policies of austerity.

Many gigs are supporting local foodbanks or other projects designed to get help directly to people in need. If you are a singer, a band, a venue, a promoter or indeed anyone willing to pitch in and get involved then please do.

Think of this as the biggest free festival ever, with stages all around the country!

WHO RUNS ‘WE SHALL OVERCOME’?
Nobody. There is no central command! Each gig is independently run and promoted locally but can use ‘WE SHALL OVERCOME’ as its banner and as an online community we shall each do what we can to promote each others events. Most of us are doing this anyway most weekends, it’s just a chance to bring it together via the power of social media!

IS IT ORGANISED BY A POLITICAL PARTY?
No this is absolutely not party political but it is anti-austerity. We have Socialists, Labourites, Greens, Communists, Anarchists, Trade Unionists, Punks, Mods, Folk singers, Bikers, Hippies, Bass players, and even peer-led demarchists. This is just a bunch of people standing together in defiance of austerity politics in the UK, while trying to do some good for our communities and each other.

HOW DID IT GET STARTED?
It began as a suggestion by Stephen Goodhall during a conversation with musician Joe Solo on May 10, just days after the election. Other musicians soon got on board and it snowballed. The Facebook group is administrated by Joe Solo, Stephen Goodhall, Jamie Bramwell, Matt Hill & Tony Wright. Jamie Walman of the band The Hurriers kindly designed and donated the logo. The rest has been done by hundreds of people across the UK who have booked venues and got musicians on board.

It's a great initiative and I'm just doing PR for the one down my manor but I would urge you all to do one of your own or support one that's already there.

A melodic fuck-you to austerity. Music to my ears... xxx

Indeed. Get the fuck on it. If it's not happening near you, make it happen.

Saturday October 3rd there'll be an afternoon/evening gig at Shakespeares in Sheffield. There's a spoken word event planned for the Friday night too i believe.

This starts on Friday. Check out the map here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mi ... IaKwfQPnqs Or listings here: http://weshallovercomeweekend.com/gigs/

There's something happening reasonably near everybody, almost 250 events. It's not too late to get involved if there's nothing on your door step.

Silver Darling Andy Whitehouse and myself are running this at Shakespeares on Saturday October 3rd: http://www.facebook.com/events/381783612019092 We've got live music & poetry from Sieban, The Silver Darlings, The Electric Luddites, Hungarian Lanterns, Quiet Loner, Dru Blues, Dean Geary, John T. Angle and The Last Politician. It all starts at 3.30pm. Entry is by donation with proceeds going to The Cathedral Archer Project and local food banks. Bring non-perishable food, beans, pasta, coffee, dried milk, sauces, biscuits, toiletries, underwear (new! clean!), you get the idea. There'll be a raffle and other stuff to try and cajole any pennies you can spare out of you too.

Anyone else in Sheffield there is also this happening at Queens Social Club on the Friday night, a spoken word event: http://www.facebook.com/events/1475252522778498

This event is this weekend! Off to two down my manor, featuring a friend and his great band.

There are 250 all over the country so there's no excuse for staying at home. Money or foodbank donations much welcomed. Monkey Boy's Sheffield stuff looks ace and the Cathedral Archer Project is one of the beneficiaries – a great scheme to help those in need.

If we want to change things, we've got to get stuck in! xx

Top day at the Shakey yesterday. Car full of food delivered to S6 foodbank today and just short of £300 on its way to the Archer Project. Friday night was grand too. Never been to a poetry night before, but always good to turn off the TV and try new stuff, no? There's a whole week of We Shall Overcome happening next year. Get yourselves involved. You don't have to know anything about putting on a gig (most of the people involved this year were doing just that for the first time). And it's not just music. Like Friday there have been poetry nights, history walks, bike rides, club nights, anything you can use for fund raising.

Jolly fine effort all round. The events in Walthamstow were very well attended and raised lots of money for local groups, as well as generally giving you heart. There are lots of people willing to stand up and be counted – it's just that sometimes you forget.

And echo what Monkey Boy said. I am no musician and I am no promoter – did the PR for our raft of gigs but that's about it. But next year, I am going to put on an event of pure funk – proper, unadulterated, all-nighter of hot, sweaty funk. All you folky, indie lot are all well and good but we need a few more people in catsuits and an afro...

The voice of reason.

I think a three bit suit - with five pint beer belly waistcoat - jacket lapels that reach to the shoulder and 32" flares are in order - in tangerine wih black edging...
