On Saturday November 29th, WagonWheel Presents… reunites four great singer/songwriters for what promises to be another special night. After last year’s show we couldn’t not bring Boss Caine, Dave Woodcock, Joe Solo and Richard Kitson back together to share the same stage again. This time they come to Shakespeares for what will be the final WagonWheel show of 2014. Advance tickets priced at £5 (plus booking fee) are available from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/285000 or entry on the night will be £6. Doors open 8pm.

***BOSS CAINE***

Boss Caine are a folk/Americana collective from York, England. A tight knit, but evolving, line-up of local musicians centred around the songs of front man and ‘Yorkshire Cowboy’ – Daniel Lucas (aka GT Turbo), a man described as ‘having a voice that makes Louis Armstrong sound kinda girly’.

Boss Caine released their debut album: ‘The Ship That Sailed’, on independent label Little Num Num Music, in 2010. The record contains a selection of tunes written by Lucas over the last few years; a time that saw him leave his home town for London, before returning to York and putting together the line-up of local musicians that would become Boss Caine. Years of hard living, hard drinking and love turned sour inform an album that at times visits some quite dark places, but is ultimately carried along by a healthy dose of Northern positivity and stoicism.

The album was recorded in the North Yorkshire countryside at ‘The Factory of Unprofessional Sound’ and sees Boss Caine’s core team of Lucas, Andy Gaines and Sam Forrest joined by many of the musicians who have played in the band over the last few years. The follow up The Rhythm And The Rhyme is out now.

Stunning UK talent!!…Really Something!!” – Bob Harris BBC Radio 2

…Tom Waits singing Ryan Adams if they had both had the good fortune to grow up in Yorkshire….” – The Fly

Boss Caine are the real deal. They will rip your heart out and toss it back to you many songs later doused in whiskey, soul and more emotions than you know how to handle!” – Northern Music

***DAVE WOODCOCK***

Image

Described by Americana UK as “The next big thing from Sheffield”, Dave Woodcock & The Dead Comedians are currently at work on the follow up to their 2011 album “Poisoned Nights & Bar Room Nights”. They deliver booze soaked rock ‘n’ roll echoing Springsteen, Strummer and with a nod towards the likes of The Hold Steady. Tonight Dave performs a rare solo/acoustic set.

Damn it’s good” 8/10 – Toast Magazine

One of the best live shows I’ve seen this year“ - The Sheffield Scenester

A band at the very top of their game” – Nowhere Town

***JOE SOLO***

Image

Joe Solo has in his time been a busker, a barman, a kerb counter, a warehouse hand, a copywriter and an engineer. His musical odyssey began in 1987 fronting a bash-em-out band at school, and has seen him play in seven countries either as lynchpin of pop-punk upstarts Lithium Joe, or hammering out his unique brand of folk, punk and blues in his own right.

On top of releasing ten albums in the last eight years, Solo has written a book, and had one written about him; runs a research project on the Hull Pals Battalions in the First World War which he updates daily online; worked with underprivileged children to help them write their lives in song; recorded two audio books; and still found time to open for the likes of Chris Wood, Otis Gibbs, Robb Johnson, Edgar Broughton, TV Smith, Justin Sullivan, Emily Portman and The Blockheads; whilst his songs have featured on Mike Harding’s Folk and Roots Show on BBC Radio Two.

Live, Solo has a growing reputation as both a performer and raconteur, being thought-provoking, comical and punch-the-air political often in the same breath. He is not an artist you forget in a hurry.

Not only is that bloke a really remarkable singer and songwriter, but I think he has a really amazing attitude and we’ll see a lot more from him in the futureMike Harding, BBC Radio 2

Something as stark and ghastly as WW1 shouldn’t have been capable of producing songs as fragile and beautifulMaverick Magazine

***RICHARD KITSON***

Image

Richard Kitson is a folk/blues singer songwriter and guitarist from South Yorkshire who gained recognition after the release of his debut album Home and Dry in 2010. Kitson played guitar in Barnsley based Punk band Strawberry Jack for three years but began playing solo acoustic sets when they broke up in 2001 with a set at the famous Grapes Irish pub in his home city of Sheffield.

Kitson was born in Sheffield and lived there until the age of six until his parents moved a few miles north to Barnsley. Kitson is a self-taught guitarist who began teaching himself from books and by listening to his favourite guitar players at the age of fourteen. This coincided with Kitson’s first experience of listening to Bob Dylan and he quickly took up song writing alongside learning the guitar. Kitson began performing at an early age, playing harmonica in school talent competitions and singing in his local church choir.

2006 saw the biggest development in Kitson’s guitar playing style. He had been listening to Big Bill Broonzy, Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt and Irish guitar legend Rory Gallagher and became entranced by their finger style acoustic guitar playing. However, it was upon hearing folk/blues icons Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, John Renbourn and John Martyn that really woke Kitson up to the possibilities of the finger style guitar technique. Kitson has said of these musicians,“I was just getting to grips with the delta and country blues fingerstyle playing, thinking I’d reached a comfortable place in my playing. That was until I heard Bert Jansch who then turned me on to Davy Graham, John Renbourn and later John Martyn. It was like the guitar was completely unfamiliar to me, a foreign object in my hands. I basically started learning all over again, trying to play like them”.

Kitson recorded his eponymus first album in 2003 but could only afford to make 100 copies. The album has since disappeared but Kitson plans to release songs from it and others from what he calls his “early strumming period” in the not too distant future. However, it was the release of his second “debut” album Home and Dry that gained Kitson the credit many feel has been long overdue to him after over a decade in the music industry. Kitson is set to release new album Hermit Hill in October 2014.
