***TORN SAIL***

Torn Sail is the new band fronted by Huw Costin, perhaps better known for his work with Earth The Californian Love Dream and collaborations with left-field disco artists Smith & Mudd. Costin has also worked with Brian Eno & Mark Lanegan. Torn Sail rose from the ashes of The Cold Light of Day, put together by Richard Warren AKA Echoboy in 2008. When Warren quit to go solo a year later, the band – Huw Costin - vocals & guitar, Lee Horsley - hammond & piano, John Thompson – bass, Jim Widdop - Pedal Steel, dobro, guitar, and Jeff Davenport – drums, locked themselves in the studio to record their debut album, making the occasional rare live appearance.

The first track completed – Birds- was released to critical acclaim on cult balearic label Claremont 56 in April 2011 with a Tiago remix. The vinyl sold out in seconds. A second 12” of remixes by Cos/Mes and Frankie Valentine is available now. Work on what is promising to be a beautiful, laconic, deep and meaningful album was recently completed with a release due soon on Claremont 56.

***RICHIE SYRETT***

Image

Richie Syrett is a singer/songwriter whose typically melodic and ragged style makes a grateful nod to a number of rootsy influences whilst all the time maintaining it’s own signature sound.

After a collection of ramshackle recordings developed an appreciative audience, Richie independently released his first album. The record swiftly attracted an impressive number of new listeners and fans across all ages; stretching from the nearby murky waters of the Manchester Ship Canal to the muddy banks of the Mississippi and beyond.

Recorded on a shoestring once more, the new album Good Morning Midnight showcases an emerging and maturing songsmith whose novel writing explores a whole range of themes. Be them songs that are inspired by the extraordinary, the mundane, the sacred or the profane, all provide a perfect platform for one very distinctive vocal.

Make your own comparisons and draw your own conclusions but be sure to take note of an upcoming artist fast approaching their prime.

Profoundly melodic Americana-flecked folk-rock – Syrett has developed an individual vision which shows much promise for the future.” Americana-uk.com

***CANYON FAMILY***

Image

Born in 2012 and making their live debut at that summer’s Tramlines festival, Canyon Family play hazy Americana. Myrt sings. Lucy does too. Rob plays guitar and Ben bangs those drums. They dig Mazzy Star, Fleetwood Mac, Cowboy Junkies, Vashti Bunyan, Susan Christie and 90s teen film, Practical Magic.

The music is ethereal and one tambourine short of Mazzy Star‘s long lost sister.” Sloucher.org
