Wednesday December 17th's edition of The Wagon's Wheels is our final gig of the year and we're going out with quite a bang. We have outlaw country from The Wayfaring Strangers, our old friends The Silver Tree Club bring their all new sound to The Grapes for the first time and there's hot new Sheffield band The Clench. Doors open at 8pm and entry will be £3.

***THE WAYFARING STRANGERS***

The Wayfaring Strangers are two York Based singer/songwriters who go by the names of Mark ‘Blind Dog’ Wynn and GT Turbo (yes that is his real name).
Formed in early spring 2008 they have been writing and recording material for their debut album due for release soon.

GT is the frontman of York based country roots n blues musical collective ‘Boss Caine’ who are good friends with acid country pioneers Alabama 3. The guy has been writing ever since he can remember and writes in the three chords and the truth style of Hank Williams

He met Mark as Boss Caine were getting together in 2005. They quickly began playing together and generally educating themselves with the sounds of Neil Young, Lightning Hopkins and Townes van Zandt.

Many songs were written, many gigs played and many drinks consumed. Then in 2006 Mark joined the blues rock outfit Hijak Oscar, who toured extensively over the following two years with the likes of Shed Seven, as well as playing a sold out UK tour in the spring of 2008.

Upon completing what would become Hijak Oscars final tour Mark decided to follow a more acoustic style rooted in the outlaw country of songwriters like Steve Earle, Townes van Zandt and Guy Clarke.

During the time that Mark was a part of Hijak Oscar, GT continued playing solo and with Boss Caine, who have appeared with the likes of Guillemots, The Supersuckers, The Handsome Family, Alabama 3 and Eileen Rose. They recorded a number of EPs and notched up quite a repertoire of original material.

Upon returning to York Mark met back up with GT and they began to rehearse furiously. The songs are a joint effort and showcase a wide ranging mix of styles from Delta blues to country via traditional folk songs and all in there highly personal style of no holds barred, hand on heart, heart on sleeve song writing.

‘Dylan-esque angst ridden lyrics and raw brash style, oozing charisma, originality and style’ BBC Radio York

‘The Wayfaring Strangers have been playing roots music / americana / folk / country / blues / rock and roll / whatever for as long as I known 'em, and they've never jumped a bang wagon in their lives. gen-u-ine, real-deal, authentic roots-rock sung in a voice that makes Louie Armstrong's sound kinda girly.
I saw The Wayfaring Strangers play a couple of weeks back (Mark on distorto-fuzz blues geetar, GT with acoustic and barrel fulla new songs) and they sounded like Crazy Horse. That's basically all you need to know. If they come to your town, go see 'em.’ Paul Fuzz, music writer & DJ

***THE SILVER TREE***

It's been all change in The Silver Tree Club since last time they were in town. With their drummer and bass player having departed for pastures new, frontman Nick Wallace took the opportunity to head things in a new direction. Gone is the demonic piano playing (Nick has taken up guitar), megaphones and all the old material. They return with all new songs, new drummer, new bass player and additional new guitarist, with Don Mort now taking up mandolin duties in their new stripped back lo-fi sound. There are elements of late night jazz from the dark corner of a dive bar and comparisons have been made with the more sombre moments of Tom Waits. It's a format that allows Wallace's stories and observations to take the lead and draw the audience into the heart of his tales.

***THE CLENCH***

Recently exploding onto the Sheffield scene, The Clench deliver whiskey-fuelled, blues-swamp-funk-country rock, to put it in a not very small nutshell. The six piece band have only a handful of gigs under their belt but are starting to cause a stir on the live circuit. They aim to make 'music to ride horses by' and their sound conjures up images of Western desert landscapes and cowboys. Thereare hints of the likes of Calexico and Chris Isaak, who they usually pay tribute to with a cover of 'Blue Hotel' in their set.
