August's edition of The Wagon's Wheels sees us welcome back 3 fine acts to The Grapes after excellent performances earlier this year. Singer/songwriter Matt Hill aka Quiet Loner heads up the night, with rock 'n' roll Alt-Country from Roseville Grand and local favourites Chris Murphy & Boxer Genius. Doors open 8pm and entry is just £3.
***QUIET LONER***
Quiet Loner's debut album "Secret Ruler Of The World" was released to widespread acclaim in summer 2004, spending two months as the number one album on Maverick magazine's Americana album chart and ending the year being voted best album of 2004 by the readers of americana-uk.com.
Quiet Loner is hinged around singer-songwriter Matt Hill, often accompanied by the remarkable pedal steel guitar playing of Alan Cook. Quiet Loner subvert traditional country and folk themes into modern day tales of urban life all set in a distinctly British landscape. In fact more than one reviewer has commented that Quiet Loner's peculiar take on the dark side of country music owes as much to Morrissey and Costello as it does to Johnny Cash and Gram Parsons.
As a solo, duo or band Quiet loner have shared stages with many great performers opening for acts like Lambchop, Joe Pernice, Josh Rouse, Chris Mills, Richard Buckner, Neko Case, Jackie Leven, Peter Bruntnell and Neal Casal.
"a real talent for songwriting plus some wonderful darker moments that you can't help but fall in love with" Maverick magazine
"echoes disparate bedfellows such as Gram parsons and Elvis Costello - four stars" Classic Rock magazine

***ROSEVILLE GRAND***
Roseville Grand are the new band from singer/songwriter Neil McLarty. Expanded to feature electric guitar, pedal steel, bass and drums (from fellow ex-Silver Tree Club man Ged Creffin) the band started gigging in early 2008 and have notched up a string of dates around the country, including a support slot with former Grand Drive man Danny George Wilson's new outfit, Danny & The Champions Of The World.
Heavily influenced by all things Americana, Neil's song writing has been described by Shut Eye Records as "somewhere between Ryan Adams and Van Morrison." A comparison that is not totally unjustified. Whilst solo Neil played with people like former HaveNot Liam Dullaghan, New Orleans blues/folk singer Grayson Capps and upcoming Glasgow band The Endrick Brothers. Having been building a reputation for himself as a quality performer and song writer, that is only being enhanced further with the new bands old school brand of Alt-Country rock.

***CHRIS MURPHY & BOXER GENIUS***
Chris Murphy arrived in Sheffield (where he now calls home) after a succession of jaunts around the USA, Cardiff, Reading and Leeds. Joining bands, enjoying plenty of beer but generally trying really hard to get somewhere - anywhere in fact.
After playing as many places as he could feasibly think of in Leeds, he moved to Sheffield where he met the band he daubed The Greenlovers (who are now called Boxer Genius). The band comprises Chris, Dave Webb, Richard Klonowski, Jav and Tommy R. Jones.
Chris describes his songs as being "about people that I miss, bad dreams, good memories and boxing. Oh, and of course love."
Recent recordings include the track 'Feathers' and debut single 'Brighton', both of which can be heard on MySpace. Chris takes up the story about both songs:
"I wrote Brighton' on a wet night in Brighton in April last year. Staying in a cheap hotel and spending hours alone wandering aimlessly down by the pier. Realising how surprised you can be by 'finding' yourself somewhere. It's a celebration of the randomness of our lives and the places we end up in. Think 'Once in A Lifetime' by Talking Heads. David Byrne knows.
'Feathers' on the other hand is just about snapshots, happy photographs that can turn bitter in the course of time. We all know what those look like, the ones that give you a lump in our throat when you realise how much things have changed from that frozen moment to now."
The band draw on a wide variety of influences, not only from other musicians they admire but the numerous other projects many of them are involved in.
