On Sunday June 15th we've a knockout night of Folk Rock, Americana and Acoustic music delivered by Chris Murphy & Boxer Genius, Blind River Scare and Modern Eulogy. Doors open at 8pm and entry is £3.

***CHRIS MURPHY & BOXER GENIUS***

Chris Murphy arrived in Sheffield (where he now calls home) after a succession of jaunts around the USA, Cardiff, Reading and Leeds. Joining bands, enjoying plenty of beer but generally trying really hard to get somewhere - anywhere in fact.

After playing as many places as he could feasibly think of in Leeds, he moved to Sheffield where he met the band he daubed The Greenlovers (who are now called Boxer Genius). The band comprises Chris, Dave Webb, Richard Klonowski, Jav and Tommy R. Jones.

Chris describes his songs as being "about people that I miss, bad dreams, good memories and boxing. Oh, and of course love."

Recent recordings include the track 'Feathers' and debut single 'Brighton', both of which can be heard on MySpace. Chris takes up the story about both songs:

"I wrote Brighton' on a wet night in Brighton in April last year. Staying in a cheap hotel and spending hours alone wandering aimlessly down by the pier. Realising how surprised you can be by 'finding' yourself somewhere. It's a celebration of the randomness of our lives and the places we end up in. Think 'Once in A Lifetime' by Talking Heads. David Byrne knows.
'Feathers' on the other hand is just about snapshots, happy photographs that can turn bitter in the course of time. We all know what those look like, the ones that give you a lump in our throat when you realise how much things have changed from that frozen moment to now."

The band draw on a wide variety of influences, not only from other musicians they admire but the numerous other projects many of them are involved in.

***BLIND RIVER SCARE***

Blind River Scare hail from Newport in South Wales and come to Sheffield as part of a mini Yorkshire tour. The band were formed in late 2004 by three friends, Tim M, Jem and Tim B, after a night out. A shared love of alt/country, Americana and pop/rock, and the realisation that eveyone was available sparked the idea of a new band. After the addition of Debbie on fiddle and Lisa’s vocals, Blind River Scare was created.

They describe their sound as "Americana-tinged, original bitter sweet songs, played within a fiddle-laced, laid back pop/rock template" which pretty much nails what you can expect to hear on their recent 'Killing Time' EP.

Tonight will be a full band show, fresh from having recently supported Vetiver, another name added to an impressive list of support slots that has also included the likes of Clem Snide, Midlake and American Music Club.

***MODERN EULOGY***

Modern Eulogy are based around singer/songwriter/guitarist/harmonica player Matt Williams from Sheffield who is influenced by everthing from folk and blues to rock and dance music. Acoustic songs characterised by a blend of meaningful lyrics and catchy melody. There are nods to the more traditional style of artists like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springteen's lo-fi moments, but more modern influences like Willy Mason also clearly shine through.

Now with a full time band, they recently recorded debut LP 'Glory' following on from the succesful EP 'Positivo/Negativo'.
