Waterboys at Bridgewater Hall Manc last night.

The first and only time i'd seen the waterboys up till last night was as support to Simple Minds back in '86, but always had a bit of a soft spot for them without being what you'd call a major fan.

Have to say I was blown away by Mike Scott and the band though. Mike and Long time fiddle player Steve Wickham have been joined by a new band of mostly american musicians including the wonderful "Brother Paul" on keys who looked like a manic cross between Bill Bailey and Rick Wakeman and who played throughout with the greatest enthusiasm i've ever seen from a musician.

Sound was "big" in that waterboys style and Mike Scott is clearly a big fan of the False Finish (one song alone had 3).

Several nights left on the tour incl Sheffield so definately to be recommended if you've got a passing interest.

Having seen them recently too i can agree with all that. Especially as regards Paul Brown. Never have i seen a musician on stage as much or more into every note that was played grinning like a loon and playing like it was the last show ever to be played.. Anywhere. The crowd really fed off him too. Band overall are savage. Didnt realise until afterwards the bass player was David Hood of the legendary muscle shoals rhythm section and founder of muscle shoals sound studio. It was a privledge to see them...

Next up is Mercury Rev on Sunday.

Frank Turner at the 02 in Sheffield on Thursday night.

I've never heard a crowd sing every word of every song along with the artist before. From start to finish is was a great gig, even got the crowd doing star jumps and crouching on the floor. Best 2 hours i've had for ages!

Think we are done for gigs this year now. Next gig is Fun Lovin Criminals in Nottingham in February. Had it booked for months and can't wait!

Last Friday night Derren Brown......Very clever man. My wife felt very strange all day Saturday, shr thinks it was due to the show( ). So to perk her up a bit we went to see Faithless at Ally Pally and it was fantastic!(nuthouse) There on there again on 4th December and well worth seeing.

FJM... The man is the bôllocks live... And quite a savage band with him it's to be said.... There are fuck all great front men in music anymore but this guy is the deal... Don't fuck it up and make sure you go to this one...

Mercury Rev were marvellous last night. Having seen them in much bigger venues such as Vicar St and the Roundhouse, the button factory was all kinds of intimate and all kinds of greatness. Almost a club gig. Thought the band vibed off the closeness of the audience who more then played their part. Speaking of another great frontman.. Jonathan Donahue is up there he crazy lovable fucker.
