 Post subject: New R.E.M. album....
PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2008 1:03 am
Quote:
Billboard reports: "Nobody would ever confuse R.E.M. for Metallica but the guitars have definitely been turned up for the Georgia group's 14th studio album, "Accelerate," due April 1 via Warner Bros. Nearly all the material was tested out during a summer run in Dublin, although manager Bertis Downs tells Billboard a few of those songs didn't make the cut, and that a couple of album tunes were held back from live airings. Mostly gone is the drowsy vibe of 2004's "Around the Sun," with "Living Well Is the Best Revenge," "Horse to Water" and "Staring Down the Barrel of the Middle Distance" recapturing the old R.E.M. energy. "It's not like we're going to pretend these are ballads. These are rockers," Downs says. "I feel like there's a confidence in the material, and a communication between the three of us that hasn't been there for some time," frontman Michael Stipe told Uncut. "We didn't talk to each other for a couple of records -- as friends or as bandmates. And we reached a point before this LP where we just sat down at a table and hashed it out." R.E.M. will tour this spring; for now, the lone confirmed date is an appearance at the Langerado Festival, which runs March 6-9 in Big Cypress, Fla."

Having seen one of those Dublin gigs i must say i'm not exactly filled with confidence and for the first time ever can't say i'm excited at the prospect of a new R.E.M. album... :(

Based on (granted very little) what i've heard, their solution to the steaming pile of dullness that was Around The Sun and poor excuse for a coaster that is Reveal seems to be 'turn the volume up'. Personally i'd have preferred 'write 10 good songs again'. I hope i'm wrong.

Eh? 'New Adventures In Hi-Fi' is their best album and 'Around The Sun' was a masterpiece in my books, but with that said, I'm a bit sceptical as well. I respect the fact that they wanted to try working with somebody else, but did it have to be Jacknife Lee? I promise you, if they end up sounding like fuckin U2, somebody's gonna feel the hard end of Monty's fist.

Best band in the world though.

'New Adventures In Hi-Fi' is the last one I bought of theirs and it never got to me at all, keep meaning to re-listen as a few folk on here have recommended it - probably you - I should make it a new year resolution.

Do that. It's a modern masterpiece, a Y2K-version of 'Nebraska' and one of the damn finest alt.country albums I've ever heard. That album is pure sweaty sex. Not intercourse or love-making, nah, it's fucking. Primal fucking.

Funnily enough i just listened to New Adventures, and it is indeed a damn fine record. It's just a shame they stopped making good ones after Up.

Not sure if we'll get any musical hints, but they've set up http://www.ninetynights.com in the build up to the album.

well here is the tracklisting...

“Living Well's The Best Revenge”
“Man Sized Wreath”
“Supernatural Superserious”
“Hollow Man”
“Houston”
“Accelerate”
“Until The Day Is Done”
“Mr Richards”
“Sing For The Submarine”
“Horse To Water”
“I'm Gonna DJ”

From what I remember from the 'rehersal' gig Mr. Richards, Until The Day Is Done & Horse To Water would be potential highlights, cant remember the rest well apart from I'm gonna DJ whioch they've been playing for ages, a good song to close the album with gonna be interesting to hear this one.

In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

“Supernatural Superserious” can be streamed at Pitchforkmedia.com

Not exactly what I had hoped for to be honest...

I was unreliably informed when awoken at half six this morning by a text from Denmark that the new album's 'crap'. Lots of loud guitars, but 'crap'. Now the moose bummer in question loved 'Around The Sun' and i hated it, so maybe i'll like the new one. I just heard the new single of last night's Mark Radcliffe and it doesn't sound so bad to me.

been listening to a lot of REM recently after a period of hardly any and i have to say for me "new adventures" is standing up to be my fav album... the only slight problem is it's a bit longer than it needs to be
