I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

Agree totally - it ranks along Roberta Flack's 'Killing Me Softly' and Rod Stewart's 'Maggie May' as one of those songs that should never be covered. Too distinctive to be imitated and too 'right' in their original format to be adapted or changed for a voice other than the original artist's.

Harry Nilsson's version was a cover though, but it is the definitive version.
Badfinger's version I do like, but it's a tragic story surrounding it.

Same goes for Killing Me Softly, the original version was Lori Lieberman, I think.

Be an intersting thread topic, "Definitive Covers", if it hasn;t been done already...

I meant more cover versions that are the definitive versions, i.e. not the original, such as Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower (although I prefer Dylan's original, but the accepted standard is Hendrix's, even by Dylan).

As for Hallelujah, I'd go for Cohen's maybe, but most people will chose Jeff Buckley. Rufus Wainwright makes a pretty good stab of it too. But you have to like him in the first place I think...

John Cale's version of Hallelujah is too overlooked - I dislike the Rufus Wainwright one because I dislike his voice, the song is more suited to Leonard Cohen's sepulchral bass or Jeff Buckley's angelic tenor.

i dig cohen best though because i understand where he's coming from vocally.

My preference is Cale's version - as featured in the film Shrek (but they put Rufus version on the soundtrack album). Something about Cale's slightly cracked voice has appeal.

i have the live on later with jools performance, where he plays with a string quartet. Cale has a "choral" voice too which helps with this kind of quasi-spiritual/contemplative song.

Cale's live album 'Fragments of a Rainy Season' has a lovely version on it as well - that was the first time I had heard the song.
