Wonderful heart-wrenching version of Joe Cocker's (or Billy Preston's) 'you are so beautiful' by Dennis Wilson

If I remember correctly, Dennis was uncredited but helped write the song.

Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower. Took a superb original and made it a million times better (sorry Woodcock but you know I'm right). It's my favourite cover by a long way and I think encapsulates the chaos of the 60's perfectly and more than any other tune from that era. I don't think Dylan's musical arrangement lived up to the lyrics, Hendrix nailed it totally. Probably my favourite bit of guitaring ever as well.

Stagger Lee - Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds

Brand New Cadillac - The Clash (in fact I think all the covers they did were great)

Tricky - Black Steel

Dear Prudence - Siouxie And The Banshees

as well as tunes already mentioned like Hurt, Tainted Love, Hallelujah, Respect etc

With a few exceptions I'm only ever really bothered about cover versions that *drastically* change the original and/or are done so well that the original pales in comparison and the cover becomes the definitive version, at least in my mind.

i disagree only with this bit. Dylans arrangement meant you focussed all the attention on the lyrics which is a beautiful, bizarre little parable told in reverse. the hendrix version (fucking amazing as it is) is all about the music and the lyrics get lost in the maelstrom. just my opinion, like.

I really like this version of 'Love will tear us apart' by Susannah and the Magical Orchestra - saw her last year supporting Bonnie Prince Billy - really talented

I agree with Ignatz Wrobel on Devos version of "Satisfaction".
I also love Buffalo Toms interpretation of "Going Underground".
Lambchop recorded a great version of "This Corrosion" and, in a surreal turn of events, performed "(Get a) Grip (On yourself) by The Stranglers live.
Johnny Cash (who deservedly appears in quite a few lists) makes "One", "The Mercy Seat" and "Hurt" sound like his own songs.
Finally, a New Wave shout for The Rezillos version of "Somebodys gonna get their head kicked in tonight".

aghhhhh nooooo :*: have to disagree with you. I thought that was pretty dreadful myself. At least they tried to make it different I guess but didnt work, for me anyway. Still maybe thats one of those that should be best left alone.

Rodney Crowell doing Pancho & Lefty..

In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same

Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.
