I haven't seen this topic yet but if it's here already I'm sorry. Lyrics wise I think this album is fantastic, with the most succinct but powerful lines, especially on Don't You Cry. These two lines always hit me:

"Just visions from the hilltop,
Or a train journey late at night"

The 'visions from the hilltop' line always floors me and I can't fully explain why. I think maybe in the context of the song it's so effective because when you think of the idea literally, on a hilltop you're far removed from the world around you, just an observer, kind of like a ghost. When I go walking often I kind of feel a little transcendent if that's the word and think about memories in the past that aren't always happy ones and they always feel distant and strange almost like on a hilltop when you're looking down at the world around you they seem a little removed and obscure. Obviously I might be reading too much into it though.

Anywhoo, I'm sorry for ranting, I just have a little too much time on my hands at the moment :). Does anyone else have favourite lines from the album? I like to hear what people make of lyrics.

Not a line as such, but I've mentioned elsewhere that 'Remorse Code' is an absolutely kick-ass title/phrase!

Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

Don't You Cry, is, I think, one of the most intriguing songs lyrically. Haven't really worked out the 'story' yet. The words 'You can't cry, although you've tried' ring very true.

Heres a toast to you Helene, and all the cinemas we ran in from the rain. Clutching, holding newspapers to your face. For you lover give some time. Great imagery. Very poetic. You have to hand it to the man, he's talented

"I just want to make you smile,
and maybe stay with you a while"

"serenity is a planet on which you can reside"

"but no our moonlit sillouettes they part and fade
I'm left with a loneliness that has no name"

I also like "the morning views its headstone" - can't remember the other lines that go with it as I currently have "get a life, stop singing It's Now Or Never" on the brain :*:

Probably loads more on the album as well :D

Sorry that's my fault - I assumed it was morning as there's another line about mist enshrouding tomorrow

As penance I shall listen to that song every day for the next year :D

"Open up your door
I can't hear your voice no more
Just want to make you smile
Maybe stay with you awhile......"

Great lyrics can mean different things to different people.......at the moment this just blows me away - as I sit beside my Mum , now too weak to be out of bed, she doesn't speak, she doesn't know me.....I am just waiting.......too late to tell her now.......though I still do......

Sorry to hear about your mum Jean. I hope those lyrics give you some comfort.

My mum is struggling with of some form of Dementia but trying desperately to fight it (but refusing medical help). So sad to see a strong, supportive, family-orientated woman become such a vaguely recognisable shadow of her former self. Life can be cruel. :(

My Mum was like that Steve,,,she went to be assessed once and they asked her to write something....whatever she wanted....she wrote - I am not crackers...... she went through some weird stages....being aggressive, being afraid of what was happening.......phoning us up in the middle of the night asking why it was dark.....it's hard to be kind at three o clock in the morning........I regret some of the things I must have said to her......i just didn't know how to deal with this terrible condition....now...at this late stage , I just want to peep in that door, catch a glimpse of my Mum and make her smile.....I don't think it's going to happen.....

Best wishes to you and your Mum and family......

My favourite lyrics are probably from Soldier On. "Never say goodbye, you're the apple of my eye". The level of emotion exuded at the end of the song give the words a deeper meaning. As someone who has been in a relationship for a very long time the words of this song really hit home. :D

Best wishes to you and your Mum and family......[/quote]

Thanks for the kind words Jean. It is not all doom and gloom just yet as mum has a loving, helpful family and my Dad is fantastic with her and is able to provide an independent lifestyle for them both. He does, however, have the patience of saint but then they love the bones of each other. Recently they reached their diamond wedding anniversary and we had a couple of low-key events to celebrate which they enjoyed. I also organised a card from the Queen and mum was so made up about that and showed it to everyone!
