I live just ten minutes walk away from the first of these Iron Men. The whole installation is called 'Another Place' and Antony Gormley created them - in his own image (literally - he used a cast of his own body). They are controversially placed along a wide stretch of beach from Waterloo to Crosby and Blundellsands. They had to move some recently as their positioning was said to be a danger to shipping (some of them become submerged when the tide comes in). Crosby recently bought them and ensured the installation stays here. People come from all over the world to see them. I love them - although opinion is very divided locally.

Sometimes you see one of them dressed up in Everton or Liverpool football kit! Typical Scouse humour!

They are - and looking as impressive as ever! You probably get the best view from the car park at Hall Road in Crosby - you see more of them from there. Enjoy :)

I wouldn't mind seeing those - I hadn't realised they were so far out that they posted a threat to shipping though!

I can't help it but that one photo there reminds me of The Day the Earth Stood Still............

Actually I know what you mean! As for being far out - I think it was a bit of an overreaction on someone's part. Health and Safety....Risk Assessments.... someone in a small dinghy might accidentally stray etc and before you know it, they're likely to sink the container ships! They were never all that far out really

Ann (or Mimithecat), thanks for posting this thread.

The 'Iron Men' are fantastic. I grew up overlooking the seafront in Waterloo so the arrival of 'Another Place' to such a familiar environment was exciting.

I get along to see the statues regularly. The kids (well the two oldest) love them as do the majority of people in the Crosby area and Merseyside.

Health and safety risks plus the effect on wading birds :? :? were quoted by local Conservatives as reasons to get rid of them a couple of years ago (they didn't want them in the first place) but the politically-motivated campaign was blocked.

Bogus arguments were presented on behalf of posh people in Blundellsands who simply didn't want visitors clogging up 'their' roads and blotting 'their' view.

It was a disgrace and pity the dim-witted who went along with the plot. They wore faces like smacked arses when they were forced to climb down.

The good news is the 100 statues are now here to stay. Well worth a visit...wherever you live!

I'd be happy to give directions, advice, info...whatever.

I like the stuff he has previously done, however one of his creations is in the sometime future going to be part of the skyline of my home town, I don't know myself maybe I just need to see it to fully apriciate it but you can make up your own minds, here is an artists impression or whatever...

I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

I quite like that! It's very big though - I'd probably prefer it a wee bit smaller........... but it has one hell of an impact! :D

There's obviously loads of websites featuring Gormley's work. Here's a few, including Flickr's Gormley usergroup...

They had some of the statues sited on various rooftops in London not so long back, it was quite fun to spot them all.

I also liked it when we had the cows all over the place, you'd go for a walk and find them in the streets, in London squares, Liberty had a lovely one painted with one of their fabric designs.

I like sculpture, maybe we need a thread about our favourite sculpture (some of my faves are in the photos on my My Space).
