Went on Saturday and I never fail to love the place every time we go. We always have fish and chips when we go but because we had them on Friday, I had afternoon tea for 1st time in my life at Bothams..........sarnies, scone and cream cake. Recommend it to anyone (although not if you want to do much walking afterwards!!!!!)

My parents honeymooned there and regularly go back. We camped there once as kids - right up near the abbey and it was dreadful, stormy weather - not a good time to camp.

Here is the the big question: where is the best fish and chips in Whitby? My vote goes to Hadleys just over the bridge.

my second most favourite place on earth. luke, get yourself to bats and broomsticks b and b, pretty cheap, gothic, 4 poster beds, massive breakkie and great mine hosts. think they play sisters, damned and nick cave at breakfast.

chris, best chippie in whitby? absolutely no contest, no arguement, it's got to be the magpie. it's as good as all the reports say. if you want really good tea and scones, get yourself to the shepherds purse cafe in the back room on church street. monster cakes and proper tea that strips the fillings out your teeth.

i once camped on the cliff by the abbey many years ago. thought it would be fun to break in to the abbey after the pubs closed. had to climb over the portcullis gate to get in. some of us started climbing up the abbey itself but some git switched the lights off at 2:30am and left us stuck half way up the abbey. i got stuck on the portcullis gate by my shirtsleeve trying to get out, with the spike digging into my arm. had to hang there for ten minutes, whimpering for help, in my undies as i had to take me drainpipes off as they were too tight and i was too pissed. happy days.
