I walked up to the top of Bleaklow in the Derbyshire Peak District today, with my usual walking crew - the wreckage of a B29 Superfortress that crashed there in 1948 is still scattered up there on top, over a wide area. The weather was fabulous, but I wouldn't like to be on there when the cloud comes down.

there's a lot of plane wrecks up there if you know where to look, i've got a fascinating book on the subject, must dig it out. Very said and poignant. I remember hearing that during the war a big bomber - Lancaster, I think - ploughed into the ground with such force it practically vapourised, to this day there's just a big crater in the ground and nothing else. The scenery just makes it all the more haunting. |

This reminds me of a similar story, that of a Halifax lost on the Lake District Fells in 1944. One of the Merlin engines is now in Coniston, outside the Ruskin Museum, where I have viewed & touched it many times. A most affecting story. http://www.yorkshire-aircraft.co.uk/aircraft/ll505.html |

Amazing photographs. I seem to recall walking around Derbyshire in the past and noticing all this stuff lying about and not knowing what it was. I just thought someone had dumped loads of stuff out there.. |

Excellent photographs 
There are many plane wrecks on Bleaklow and nearby Kinder Scout, but the Superfortress is by far the best (if 'best' is the correct world to use). I have been to many of them over the years and pitched a tent for the night near a couple of them last weekend. Quote: The weather was fabulous, but I wouldn't like to be on there when the cloud comes down.
I recall a walk we did a few years ago in the winter on Bleaklow. The weather closed in pretty bad and we ended up pitching tents and riding the storm out until the following day. |

There was a crash near Nantwich town in 1944. The pilot avoided the town, his body and the plane were buried in the marshy ground near the river. He was an American pilot, his grave is looked after by the people of Nantwich as his actions saved the lives of people in the town. http://www.ww2museums.com/article/18976 ... ntwich.htm |
