Bloody hell, I started this thread with a picture of Canning Town on a winter's morning and we end up with French Polynesia! That will teach me...

No offence was intended by posting the pictures.

Think there's lots of us in the same boat here, looking enviously at Egg's lovely holiday snaps but knowing that we won't be able to afford to go away this year. (except to the Teddy Boy's 2011??). His Lordship's 50th is approaching rapidly so trying to think of things to do that are special but cost effective. Ideas on a postcard please!

It seems there are quite a few people who are 50 this year..........me
included (Old Fart!! )

In my 50th year I want to make sure that every month I do something
that I will never forget. Yes I've had an unbelievable start with the hols
in FP and LA, but it's not always about money and expensive items.

One day I have never forgotten was 20 odd years ago. I was driving
back from doing a job near Lincoln and decided to go the scenic route.

It was a lovely sunny day and I came round a corner and stopped the
car to look at the view.

When I got out of the car I slowly realised that I was totally alone and
in complete and utter silence, no cars, no people, no birds, no noise, no
wind.......nothing.

It lasted a few minutes and in some respects was a bit eerie. I've never
experienced anything like before or since and will never forget it.

So the ideas on a postcard could be a view, a park bench, a song, a meal,
a picture and sometimes just a thank you is priceless........that's another
story.

Sounds like heaven to me, I love technology and how we can [if we put our minds to it] use it to make our life simpler / easier when we need to as we were promised on Tomorrows World back in the 80's, but who was it that decided everything should beep, parp, trumpet, have a jingle that announces its on!

anyway, carry on...

Yep, and me too, although not for a while yet. And I agree that the best times don't always involve massive financial outlay. Which is good cos there's not much to outlay!

That campsite down there...

Is my favourite place in the world. It's the Back of Kepoch, near Arisaig, North West Scotland somewhere... Can't wait to go back.

I will also be 50 next time - I was intending to go to a spa and have a peaceful day without the chaos that I normally live in... my 49th birthday was very calm but I think something to aim for is always a good idea.......

that looks like the lake district.

i fancy a night in the wasdale head hotel. wastwater is wonderfully remote and the journey over wrynose and hardknott pass is fabulous. i'm a bit too out of practise for a stroll up helvellyn these days so i'll just have to gaze in wonder.

Well spotted, Derwentwater. I love Wastwater and that pub does great sandwiches. I don't do much serious hardcore walking anymore – having kids sort of put paid to that. But it'll be nice to just get the city out of my head for a few days. Will take some photos and try to get technically literate enough to load them up. And will have a butty in the Wasdale Head for you. x
