Oh, making me jealous! I know that bakers. And there used to be a little portacabin cafe on the beach where you could get a hot choc and mad little bits of old lady cakes wrapped up in cling film. We still have a pot of fossils we found on the beach there – the ammonites are the most weirdly fantastic things and seeing one that is six foot wide is just mad, like a giant curly prawn. We've got a picture of our big boy, who's now 10, lying down in the middle of one of the impressions in the rock and he loves it.
John Fowles lived in Lyme Regis and loads of his books are set in the cliffs around there. The French Lieutenant's Woman is really good. Won't give away the plot but it's really cleverly written, flashing between fact and fiction. Think Paul weller must like him cos he wrote The Butterfly Collector which is the title of a Jam song. If you read it, it will make you want to live there.
Loads of the songs on Billy Bragg's last album you can almost hear the beach in them. Must be nice waking up to that every day – it's better than watching the sun rise over Canning Town that's for sure. x
