Shouldn't we be negotiating a 'Hawley Forum' discount at the Magpie?

steam railway at pickering to glaisdale.
great pub at levisham (i think) called the horseshoe.
sandsend for surfing.
staithes is a nice place to visit, nice art gallery.
ruswarp, just before you get to whitby. good nursery for plants and used to be a little railway for the kids. right beside the river esk.
falling foss waterfall is a nice walk.
goathland if you want to do the touristy hearbeat crap.
beck hole for the birch hall inn, one of the best pubs in britian.
most of the villages (egton bridge, aislaby, etc) have pubs that are worth a visit.

before you get to Whitby make sure you stop off at the hole of horcum (you can't miss it) - a massive naturally-formed bowl, or dip or hole or whatever you call it, in the middle of the moor. Either way it looks amazing, rather like the hole left by an astoroid.

i often want to go a walk down there but never seem to have the time because if i am going to whitby then that is "it".

However we always stop off to have sandwiches there. Often in impossibly high winds :)

That is GORGEOUS! I did that trip about three years ago, the sun was shining and it was absolutely beautiful. I could have spent all day travelling up and down on the train but we had to go and see Heartbeat country while were there of course! :*:

It really felt like going back in time with the unspoilt landscape and the old fashioned carriages it was a bit of a jolt when we got out of the station and saw modern cars and stuff again :?

The village of Castleton is quite nice, and just a twenty minute or so drive from Whitby. This puts you on the edge of some beautiful walking country, if that's your thing.

Get a good map and take note of the weather though. I was there about a year ago, and what started off as a very warm and sunny day deteriorated into torrential rain and very scary lightning and thunder.

Cheers, Steve.

i've been there many times in the pouring rain - generally i hate that kind of weather but for Whitby i will certainly make an exception. :D
