Mark and I went to Madeira last week....
Had a nice time but could've done with a zimmer frame to fit in.... :*: :*:
The entertainment was cooking lessons by the pool.... honest!

But we went on a wicked dolphin watching trip and the plucked a baby turtle out of the water to save him coz he thought a carrier bag was his jellyfish dinner and was chasing it!

I have always fancied a week or two here - it looks like fine walking country. From your comments, I presume a lot of OAP's holiday in Madeira?

Cheers, Steve.

Loads....
I think we were officially the youngest people on the island.... :*:
It is very good walking country but we didn't go on any of the walking tours because it would have been like a pensioners outing. We had some nice meals out but there were no real bars or anything much to do once we had eaten.
in saying that it was a very nice country and the wildlife was great.
Here's the turtle....

dolphins....

and the lizards that were everywhere...

It's a great place to go if you like the quiet life....

Those pictures are great! It sounds like the time to go out and eat is after 10pm when all the old folks are tucked up in bed :)

I would still love to go, but I may pospone the trip for 25 years

Cheers, Steve.

Is that where they go down steep hills on sort of wooden sledges, I would pay good money to watch oldies hurtling down the slopes

We're off there for a week in September, to Funchal - but just to chill out, do some walking and get some peace and quiet ...... bit bothered now that it might be too old even for us :*:

I wouldn't worry Jan.
Funchal is very nice. The boat trip was well worth doing, the food is good and our hotel, the Pestana casino, was very nice. We still had a lovely time.

The walks are meant to be really good but we didn't go because Mark had a bad knee and I had taken my "fitflops" to wear through the day and the blooming things worked that well that after a couple of days walking arond the town my legs and hips were aching as if I had run a marathon.... don't let anyone tell you that those things don't work! They work TOO well!

Mark had also forgotten his driiving licence so we couldn't hire a car which we normally would do... so I think that Maderira has more to offer than we saw.
I'm sure you'll have a great time Jan!

My wife and I had a weeks holiday in Madeira a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. True, it is a popular destination with older folk but I would say couples (in particular) of any age will enjoy a holiday there. Madeira does not cater greatly for the 'lager lout' fraternity or those looking for highly charged dance music clubs, but there are excellent bars and restuarants and the general atmospere feels, maybe, a bit more civilised than some of the spansh costa resorts.

The scenery is spectacular and vegetation surprisingly lush and green. If youre looking to chill out and do a some walking Jan, I would say Madeira is ideal. We are hoping to return there next January for a winter break.

Anyway, have agreat one!

Sounds perfect then! We were there for a brief stop over a few years ago and it looked like the kind of place we'd enjoy. The hotel looks fab - The Cliff Bay. We'll probably hire a car for a couple of days but want to do some walking on the llevadas ... won't buy any fitflops though!

We had a really lovely week; very relaxing and gorgeous scenery as Julie and Robbo have said. Lots to do during the day if you like walking and pottering around ..... but I'm not even sure that we were old enough yet! We met some lovely people, but they were all in bed with lights out by ten o'clock! It would be a good place for Mr Hawley to take his holidays without being chased along the beach for a Jaffa Cake box signing (as he has mentioned previously) as (a) there are no beaches to be chased along and (b) even if there were, there would be no one there who could run fast enough to catch him :*:

There are a few snaps here if anyone wants a nosey

I enjoyed looking at your photo's Jan. That beer looks good and the mountains rugged - very nice!

Cheers, Steve.

Lovely photos Jan. Glad you enjoyed the holiday. Agree, Madeira is least a holiday destination where you can truly chill out and is not too far from the UK.
