Still seems to be a nice old fashioned pub. They were a little disorganised, despite my sister having pre-ordered everything for our family get together they hadn't set anything up in time for our arrival, and she had forgotten to give details of my own main course to them (luckily I had steak so it didn't take long to prepare), but the food was excellent and the setting is gorgeous.

Sadly it was raining so we were unable to do the walk by the canal as planned.

check this place out, Batofar, its an old retired Irish light house ship that is moored up river on the Seine in Paris which has been hollowed out and converted into a couple of bars, one up on deck and one down below in the music venue. Saw a band there a couple of weeks back, cool place to spend an evening you can relax on deck with the good weather or take in the band down below and wonder why you feel a bit all over the place when you've only had a couple of beers, I took some pics but they came out shit so I nicked these from their myspace,

yeah great music & a nice vibe but expensive as fuck if I remember. Really are some wonderful bars in paris, my favourite one where my mate worked was sold earlier in the summer, it was a kip but it attracted a great crowd, great tunes sound staff and if you were a regular you'd get free shots or even the odd free beer if you were there all night, gonna miss that place.

well, the first thing to do is avoid Temple bar, which is the main tourist area, overpriced and full of hens/stags weekends.
in the city center you could check out...

Bruxelles

That brings back memories...I was in Dublin in 89'...jeeze 20 years ago!...anyways, I was hanging out in the basement, great jukebox at the time all the 80's stuff I was into Siouxsie, New Order, Smiths etc...I had on my leather Jacket...it had a painting of the bunnygod from the Bunnymen's pictures on my wall single on the back and a guy started asking me what I thought about Pete DeFreitas, and I just said I thought he was great and then he tells me he had just been killed in a bike crash....fucking hell...anyways met some other guys who claimed to be Irish Mobsters...whatever...and after the pub closed we went to a wine bar/disco....bad idea wine after Guinness and Whiskey....I ended up in the street and all I hear is this "mobster" telling to heave my Fookin' guts out....like I needed the encouragement!

cool photo Dave :*:
yes 20 years ago, tons of black velvet, 5 am , and absolutely, Eoin, fucking expensive.

haven t been regulary to bars in Paris for yonks but ONE address, for food and wine before you hit the bars or else is:

"L'ami Pierre"
not mentioned in any or very few restaurant guides.
small old style restaurant/bistro
Pierre was a dude, a "guerisseur" who would heal, a bit like an old style chiropractor) people, (well punters), in the back room of the restaurant sometimes early in the previous century. hence the name.
The restaurant was bought during the seventies by the
eternal and late Coluche, one of the funniest and greatest french bloke EVER.
for a long long time (well all the time i went there), it was run by the lovely Marie Joe (our Barbara).
You d step in and order a round while you wait for a table and get a plate of the BEST saucisson on the planet complimentary.
3 plats du jour to choose from, and that s it.
but the heartiest, simplest, tastiest french classics.
amazing and pantagruelic Charcuterie or Cheese plateaux as well.
the walls covered in bottles of wine
with simple names and prices on small slate and chalk boards.
(some rotating paintings as well)
One typical parisian waitress working her ass off but remaining charming.
authentic crowd. priceless.
marie joe behind the zinc curved "comptoir" (counter/bar) playing cards and serving you a good double complimentary great calvados on your way out.
i heard Marie Joe's retired now, but the vibe s still there
take it from me. an authentic, unique, simple and rare french place.

up Bastille way was always somewhere we headed at the end of those rareish nights when we were too pissed to know we'd had enough and should go home and get some kip, alright maybe not so rare then. I have been in many a great bar up there but I'll be fucked if I could remember any of the names. I'll check that out though Coolfrog I'll be back over March latest. I miss Paris, I'd love a beer now in one of those awesome places round the 5th, Crepes in Nico's on Mouffetard and home, ahhh those were the days, time to stick on a bit of Edith Piaf before bedtime.
