This is just such an amazing place. Built by Italian prisoners of war who built the Churchill Barriers during the Second World War, it is actually 2 Nissan huts joined together. The paintings and sculpture are wonderful and they used anythig they had ot hand - concrete and wire from building the barriers, old corned beef tins to create stunning candalabras. The main artist - Domenico Chiochetti - returned in 1960 to restore some of the paintings and added more. Sadly, he died a few years ago but the chapel is a must-see for anyone visiting Orkney. It is now lovingly maintained by local people which is quite a feat as they are waging a constant war against deterioration and the elements.

It looks cared for. Beautiful. The poshest Nissan huts ever!

Was it (or is it) used as a chapel for proper services?

This is the interior and it's amazing to see how much beauty can be created using leftover tins, bits of wire and a lot of love, devotion and commitment - not to mention talent.

We go every year now ever since we had a handfasting ceremony in one of the ancient stone circles. It's a fascinating and magical place like no other. We'll be back there soon. Can't wait!

That sounds wonderful. I would love to visit the Orkneys, maybe one day I will.

I read about handfasting (and stone circles) in Diana Gabaldon's books.
