Jersey?

Anyone been to Jersey?

Just come back from there after a glorious week in the sun.

Hired a bike. Nice views, lovely beaches, lively capital St. Helier with a couple of good guitar shops and some nifty nightspots (altho' too worn out from beachbumming to go out to any).....

(women weren't bad either).

Not been, but would love to go. Heard it's expensive? Is that true?

My memory of Jersey was that a little town / village called St Johns had a Ferrari franchise as it local car showroom - came across it by accident driving [whilst lost] around the country lanes...

Also the end of the Airport runway was a cliff edge ...nice

Just like when you take the Skybus from Lands End to the Scilly Isles...................you just feel like you are in an old ford bedford van ..............driving across a field..............and just when you think you are going to plunge over the cliff..you take off......................................it's marvelous........I haven't been to Jersey, but friends have said it's expensive..again similiar to the Scillies.....................

As far as food and drink you've got to be a little on your guard otherwise reasonable enough but accommodation-wise can't say as was staying at friends but don't think it's too excessive.

To live there though you've got to belong to the yachting club or somesuch with homes in the millions-range although the atmosphere's far from snooty and with every second person either a Portugeses or Polish immigrant it has a distinctly cosmopolitan feel!

On our flight we were effectively taking off over their equivalent of lands- end (a lone lighthouse on a rocky pinnacle) but luckily had comfy seats to distract us from any of the dangers of reality.

Just back from a lovely first time visit and long weekend break in Jersey. I loved Jersey's 'autumn face'. It can be expensive but during October/November, they have 'Tennerfest'; this means that some of the good restaurants have a limited three course sample menu for £10. It's a beautiful place - very laid back - the shops all close on Sundays and there are no buses on Sundays either. It didn't seem to be at all commercialised and reminded me of seaside towns from my childhood. Lots of really good, cosy 'proper' pubs too. We visited the War Tunnels/Hospital and it was really fascinating to learn about the wartime occupation of the island; something I had known very little about before my visit. Car hire is fairly good value at this time of year and we got a 'three nights for the price of two' offer on our hotel. Definitely recommend it - the countryside is really pretty - the stuff that Enid Blyton's Famous Five Adventures were all about :D

.... Strange parking legislation though! :*:

I also had a weekend break recently in Jersey and I ditto everything Jan H has said about the place. The German Underground Hospital (now known as the War Tunnels) really is a bit of an eye opener - not the sort of place you go to for "a laugh" though. Some of the sea views are stunning, and because the island is only 12 miles by 6 there is so much to see in such a small area. I'm definitely going back soon. They also had a music festival back in August with the Zutons being one of the main acts. It would be a very nice place for Mr. H to fit a gig in sometime next year... hint, hint.
