I believe this is where Richard met Clive. Unfortunately it's closing.

That's crap. Someone may step in and give the place a lift, though? I lived in Manchester for a while but never went to the pub.

If it's the one I'm thinking of it's not from the Arndale amid the dreaded one-way system. They were plenty of pubs round there but I always got the impression they were for locals or hardened boozers.

A canopy on the front would help with smoking. Without some provision, smokers feel like lepers just hanging around on a busy pavement.

The lace curtains are wonderfully nicotine stained in the photo.

i've been thinking ........(difficult to believe, i know)

so, the last unreconstructed pubs in manchester centre are,

peveril of the peak
circus tavern
the grey horse
vine inn
city arms
briton's protection (though that has been tarted up and is really citified)

anyone think of anymore ??

The Peveril of the Peak was up for sale for a short time not so long ago before a change of mind, so we can wonder how long that'll last. A major landowner in the area has also suggested moving the Briton's Protection four metres to the left to allow a development of flats -thankfully I think that's gone away for now.

CAMRA have just done a report about villages that no longer have pubs and are losing any community spirit because of it.

We were out a couple of years ago with someone who manages a non-descript franchised pub, and went into the Briton's Protection. She asked "why would anyone come here - too many little rooms and no background music?" !!! Perhaps because we get a nice pint, in a pleasant room with a roaring fire (it was December) and we can actually hear the conversation we're having with our friends.

We need to protect our pubs, but unfortunately the people who try are seen as outdated, real ale drinking fogies by the major breweries who it seems are happy to go along with supermarkets being their major outlet.

Would Mulligans be added to your list? Is it unreconstructed beneath the Irish influence -it's obviously younger than the others? It's one of the few city centre bars I choose to head to other than those you mention, though must admit to never having been in the Circus Tavern.

farewell england..............i am sorry but if you think of england you CANNOT think of it without its ancient pub culture, and as we know there are pubs..........and there are pubs.............fagans is like a second home to me,but most pubs in the city centre i wouldn't even know the barmans name.i recall a time only a few years ago when i could leave the house and not even bother to call a pal to meet me and there would be six or so pubs i could walk into and have a pint and if i was feeling lonely or just fancied a chat i could do the crossword or talk to the landlord or landlady who i had known for years there is only one pub left that i can do that in...Fagans......god bless tom and Barbara.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Is the Salisbury still flying the flag for proper boozers? Tucked away off Oxford Road. The Lass O'Gowrie is great too and I agree with everything said about the Britons Protection! ..>

Did a search for the Nags Head [Jacksons Row] - still there but done up a bit - the scary bit though is the web cam availability via the website - its almost in real time

any boozer with a webcam is very very wrong.

plastic paddy pubs do NOT count

the salisbury is a bit of a rock pub, not a boozer

the lass 'o gowrie is ok but was not originally a pub and has too many telly screens

you can see my definition of the right sort of pub is exacting, though i couldn't quite define it, but is one of those things where you know it when you see it.

and there are fewer and fewer of them :(

Does the Jolly Angler in Ducie St fit the bill, Clive? Admittedly not been in for about 2 years, but it used to be most definitely unreconstructed - a proper pub for a pint and a natter.

Tend to favour the Marble Arch, meself. Not city centre, but not much of a stroll up Rochdale Road from the self-styled Northern Quarter. They serve food that a proper pub probably wouldn't, but the building is lovely and they've got cracking ale on all the time

It is a growing nightmare though....and it's even worse in rural areas.

you've hit the nail on the head there, the jolly is my fave pub. but i try to keep it quiet, it's tiny and should be left undisturbed, and the marble is top even though the interior has been remodelled, it was one of the first micro breweries about 20 years ago. i drink in the chorlton version on sunday night, just to stretch the weekend that bit further.

The Lass has telly screens now? Like you said it was always a bit on the modern side but still, oh dear.

the Jolly Angler - did that used to have (or still ahve) a pool table wedged into one corner? If so I still remember getting chased off it by surly locals many years ago...

Quite glad the perveril, the lass and the briton's are still there- scene of my very first pub crawl. Most nostalgic, even though boyfriend at the time was an utter toe-rag, the pubs themselves were the best bit (ah the joys of Madchester, as it was back then).
