Wonder if it's a case of the album being hyped in advance leading to media reviewers being a bit 'over critical'? Who are the reviewers anyway? No different to people on this forum? People who like listening to music and have a view about what they hear! People are going to buy it anyway.

I love the most of the tracks, Distant Dreamer, Mercy, Steppin Stone, Rockferry in particular .. a couple of weaker ones perhaps but no real bad ones. I'm sure it'll do well whatever the media reviewers say.

Well done iTunes, the album is in the wrong Duffy section as well.

As predicted, number 1 album and still number 1 single.

i like the question posed by word magazine on the album:

soul or sludge?

admittedly, "mercy" has probably the most cliched and predictable opening lines in all pop music - "i love you/but i gotta stay true" :puker: :pukel:

Nice to see that this little Welsh minx is getting lots of chat on here.

I met her when I did the video shoot for Mercy (I'm the one dancing about in the hat, dodging the fire). We spent a lot of time talking about Dave Godin and her appreciation for soul music. Which seemed very genuine. She's also perfectly polite, articulate and well spoken.

When we turned up to dance, we didn't know what to expect, I wasn't too fond of Rockferry, but Mercy really is a stunning song. And her voice is enviable. It's very simple and the chorus pretty much dominates the song, but more often simplicity is key. It reminds me massively of Dee Dee Sharp's voice in the mid-sixties. And how Tom Jones (along with myself) always wanted to be Jackie Wilson.

I get the feeling she's a lot more in tune with the music she's making than Winehouse ever was, since Ronson was pretty much the skills behind Back To Black.

The album went gold or something in the first week of sales, which has undoubtedly come of the back of a lot of hype. Deservedly so from 'Mercy', and you can't move from one station to the other without hearing it. In terms of exposure it's startling what happens when the major label cogs kick into full gear.

It was interesting to hear the radio citing 'Mercy' as her debut single as 'Rockferry' did surprisingly little as her debut release.

Some of the album I've heard is pretty much lifted from the Atlantic Songbook, which is a shame because her voice is far stronger than that. If anyone heard her Live Lounge acoustic version of Mercy on Jo Whiley you were probably as blown away as I was.

Warwick Avenue might as well pay it's royalties to Leiber/Stoller for its services to 'Stand By Me'. And I'm sure that they're re-releasing Rockferry as a single which makes you wonder if they were struggling for a third release from the album.

Either way, it's going to sell massively, irrespective of what the press or public feel about its sonic qualities.

I'd personally be thrilled to see Richard write her some stuff. Something more fresh and original and genuinely emotional. She's almost the soprano to his bass.

It'll be interesting to see where she goes from here because we've already heaped a massive load of expectation on her diminutive shoulders.

But she's definitely struck a chord (sic) with a lot of people. And will likely enlist even more, Stateside, when she travels to SXSW this week.

Fingers crossed they manage to maximize the talent in her uniquely impressive voice.

x

I have to agree, that version is lovely (and if anyone has an MP3 of it . . . ).

Mercy is also the more immediate song, Rockferry was less likely to be a hit as it doesn't get into the mind so much as Mercy does. I didn't like Rockferry until I heard her sing it live at the Apple Store.

Nice to hear Dave Godin was an influence, there's not a bad track on the compilation albums of the songs he dealt with.

I was browsing youtube and caught a clip of sixties singer Twinkle singing 'Terry'.......................She really reminded me of Duffy with the hair and that amazing voice.............................

Thanks Alf, one of the songs from my childhood which I'd forgotten about. I only have Twinkle singing Terry.

Sheffield's HMV had about 15 copies of the Rockferry 7" in stock yesterday. Not sure if its a second pressing, as it was limited to 1500 copies originally :?
