I haven't listened to Pacific Ocean Blue in ages, or Bamboo - but a friend from the States just mailed me a You Tube link to a video of Dennis and I'm now listening to his stuff.

Absolutely love the Dennis Wilson song "Moonshine".

If you haven't heard "Lady" on the Bamboo album that is also a high recommendation.

I have that song from when it was originally released as the b-side of Sound of Free. And I have Bamboo as well as some other stuff. There's a You Tube video of Dennis singing Lady - I can't add the link from here as You Tube is banned, but it's easy to find.

Dennis was always the 'bad' boy of the Beach Boys - always getting into trouble but sooo talented. I loved his track 'Angel' on the Beach Boys LA album - still have a vinyl copy somewhere and must dig it out (now I'm showing my age!). I think he was to the Beach Boys what George Harrison was to the Beatles in terms of his talents as a songwriter/performer (George being constantly in Lennon and McCartney's shadow but producing some of their most memorable and beautiful songs).

In most other groups, I think Dennis would have been the one everyone knew as the main creative talent but with Brian Wilson's genius behind them, the only time he really got a look in was when Brian took himself off to bed for the duration of the 70s.

Rest in Peace, Dennis.

Dennis did seem somewhat overshadowed by Brian's writing and Carl's singing. And the stuff he did with Manson was different. But he definitely had talent and sadly that was lost to us. Your reference re the Beatles is about right I would say.

By all accounts his voice was shot to pieces before his diving accident as a result of toooooo many ciggies & too much life. I agree with previous posts on here 'Lady' & 'Moonshine' are amazing songs, surprised 'Lady' never made it onto a BB's album 'cause it was released well before 'Pacific.......'.

May have something to do with Dennis's extremely volatile relationship with Mike Love who, while Brian was so out of it for so many years, tended to exert rather more influence than was perhaps good for the band (that's my opinion anyway). Mike was largely the instigator of Dennis being sacked from the Beach Boys - the two just hated each other with a vengeance. I'm sure you're right about his voice - but somehow that added a raw quality all its own

I believe Dennis' hate of Mike was part of the reason he married one of Mike's daughters. I recall seeing photos of him with her and she did seem to have smartened him up briefly.

I believe that is true. From memory, I think her name was Shawn and she was the result of one of Mike Love's many one-night stands - or brief affairs. I don't think he even properly acknowledged that she was his daughter - although everyone knew she was! The marriage didn't last long though. I'm sure there were faults on both sides - but Dennis's constant drinking, drugging, womanising, disappearing for days on end and being constantly broke can't have helped a great deal!

True Mimithecat, he had a kiddie with Shawn Love as well I believe. It's all very sad really, another great talent lost to drink & drugs.

They had a son called Gage. According to Jon Stebbins bio of Dennis, Mike just went totally ballistic. And the marriage to Shawn lasted 'about as long as a cup of coffee'.

The bio ends with the comment that the unreleased solo stuff was rumoured as about to be released - that was 1999, bootlegs are still the only way to get the songs.

Mmmm, I've got most of the stuff that's out there I think- Bamboo, Pacific Ocean Blue & another album which is a compilation of songs he wrote for the BB's plus other assorted out-takes, all good stuff. 'Lady' is always the one that floors me though - f**kin' ace song, never tire of it. I haven't read that bio by the way, is it worth a gander?

It's okay, I've also got Adam Webb's Dumb Angel, and Edward Wincentsten's Denny Remembered - whcih is more Dennis in Words and Pictures than a bio. Of the three I preferred the Stebbins book.

I've quite a few other books on the Beach Boys, oddly I've very few on the Beatles yet I liked both groups equally, I read Hunter Davies bio of the Beatles and haven't really bothered with any others.

Beatles books, I've read a few - my fave is the Anthology one 'cause it's all first hand accounts. 'Shout' was pretty funny - isn't that the one which covers the disastrous Apple Xmas party where J&Y dress up as Father & Mother Christmas & the Hells Angels trash the place? Read 'The Lives of John Lennon' recently as well & couldn't decide if it was utter bollocks or not. I think Lennon wasn't the saint which Yoko's marketing team make him out to be & I doubt if he's the complete twat portrayed in the Albert Goldman(?) book.Truth is probably somewhere inbetween.

The story becomes ever more tragic as Shawn died in 2003 or 2004, at the age of 38, from liver cancer. Their son, Gage Dennis Wilson, was born in 1983 but as to where he is now, I don't know. I've recently ordered a bio of Dennis from Amazon but it has been delayed. Maybe that will tell me. Wonder if they ever will release the unreleased material of Dennis's?
