Not the finale on Coles Corner ( :*: ),

.....BUT the BBC programme about the imminent demise of the Working Man's Club.
A documentary about this hugely important piece of British culture being in the death throes. Desperately sad.
Showed lots of scenes of elderly (and not so elderly) people enjoying socialising in Bradford.
Where will they go?
No doubt the smoking ban has decimated such a cultural lynchpin, but the documentary maker concluded that life today is just leaving these places behind. :(

I watched it too Rita and found it fascinating.I could feel the frustration of the committee member who wanted the club to offer new activities and change the status quo.Sad that many disalousioned people end up bitter and fall into racist rhetoric.

I wanted to see that but forgot to tape it (have been on nights ).I have been a member of Garforth wmc for about 20 years now and my dad is a life member of his Wmc so i have been brought up with them, you do worry about the future of them, lots of clubs are shutting nowadays,i think the price of beer between pubs and clubs has narrowed, the smoking ban has meant less people go.

It doesn't help that these places really are stuck in the '50's - and seemingly run by the same committees. Phoenix Nights was spot on as a parody, yet they still continue in the same stubborn way. It is very sad to see once strong communities at their wits end though.
