Don't know whether there are any Edwyn Collins fans out there but I thought I'd put a link for the video for his new single which is out in a couple of weeks. I think his comeback is quite an incredible story and this song 'You'll never know' is really beautiful. Really soulful:

I remember going to see Orange Juice at the Bear Pit in Newcastle - it was every bit as sulubrious as it sounds - they came on, tore into the first song, then EC glared at the audience (there was me at the front, Banarama hair do and everything!) and he snarled 'We're no' f.....ckin Kajagoogoo so if you were expecting that f... off'! ' - then straight into Rip it Up. I nearly shat. Bliddy great.

Bloody hell. I was at that gig. It was March 1983. I think the Bear pit was also known as the Newcastle Bier Keller (I actually have a live CD of the concert, if you're interested) First gig after success of 'Rip it Up. It was brilliant. The Go Betweens were support as well that night

I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

Bloody hell - small world!!! Yes, it was the Bier Keller at one time, below 'Rockshots' on Waterloo Street..... I had forgotten about the Go Betweens, I probably couldn't see anything 'cos of my big hair.
it would be great to hear the CD. How did you manage that all those years ago??

It was one of those bootleg cassettes that I got from a record fair (was that an 80's thing) that was converted to a CD. What I used to like about Edwyn and it is the same with the boss, Mr H was that his banter between songs used to be hilarious.

Definitely a small world. I used to got the Friday lunchtime strip show at Rockshots when I worked at Tyne Tees in the '80s - I'm forever haunted by the lingering image of the bonafide midget in the audience who always hurled himself at the strippers and buried his nose in their bumholes. :D :D

God it was rough!!!!!!!

I worked just upstairs....I had a leaving do one lunchtime at Rockshots and as a concession to me being a girl they provided male strippers (probably bar staff!!!!!!)

I vaguely remember Clint Eastwood prancing around with a pair of my mates knickers on the end of his er, cigar and a crowd of hysterical females slithering out of the place in a puddle of baby oil.

I hope it was baby oil.

That sounds quite funny. Must be the North Sea air. The whole area seems to run on booze and sex. Shimmer, shimmer, suddenly I'm back at the Shoreline Club in South Shields listening to Relax for the 10th time and wondering does it get any, erm, seedier...? 8)

Just for all those people interested in Edwyn, I believe there is a documentary on Friday about him. BBC 2 at about 10, I believe.
