Did anyone see this tonight (& the first part last week)? I don't normally go for these 'four modern day engineers build something from the past' things, - too many modern day egotists - but this one is a cut above the usual. So far they've re-manufactured, using the traditional skills as far as possible, a section of the Titanic's hull & a full sized anchor, and each time the end product has been left as a memorial in the town where the original parts were made. The replica anchor was made at Sheffield forgemasters - an awe inspiring & terrifying place. 8)

missed the first one but saw the second one - not bad, like you i was expecting it to be a bit gimmicky (was half expecting tony robinson to be presenting it!) - if you're interested in Titanic lofty check out the RMS Titanic Inc. facebook page for all the new pictures from the expedition to the wreck this year, the first visit since 2005.

there's some stunning, high-definition pictures. I'm not sure which anchor they were reproducing in the show though, did it specify or not as i missed the first five minutes; Titanic had three anchors, one on the port and starboard bows and the centre anchor (which was, or rather is because it still exists on the sea bed, a whopping 50 tons).

i went to the titanic artifact exhibition in london at the science museum in 2003, it was very moving. They had the famous recovered piece of hull known as "the big piece" - and for good reason. Wish the exhition would travel to the UK again, to my knowledge that was the last visit.

if you're ever liverpool bound check out the maritime museum though - they have a few titanic artifacts on permanent display :D and lots more besides.

Think it was the centre anchor that they built. They showed a photo from the wreck where you could clearly see the original, stiil in place.

to my knowledge, due to its short life, that anchor wasn't ever used. They just used the side anchors while waiting "in the lanes" as its called when they were picking passengers up in france and ireland. Plus in port it was tied up to the docks so no anchor was needed there, the centre anchor was designed to be lifted over the side by the crane above it, probably only for use in very heavy seas.

There's a hotel in Alnwick, the White Swan, which is filled with fittings from the Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic - we played a friend's wedding there a few years ago - great place -
