Found this on Iplayer and since Richard has an interest in nautical songs I thought I'd post this here.

Fell into this last night on BBC 4 [I think]...

Bob Monkhouse or Hughie Green once said 'if you can fake sincerity you've got it made' - in the case of Gareth Malone there's no fakery going on [I hope]...

The tale of transporting the Lifeboat from Whitby to Robins Hood Bay to save the sailors clinging to the wreck of The Visitor [?] was amazing.

Jeeez that guy from Port Issac was one hell of a bass :D

I watched it last night too, we were in Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby last week so the kids watched transfixed. Incredible stuff, it's so right that these stories and traditions shouldn't die out.
I loved the fishermen who still sing while they work!

Missed this part of the programme, but was this the time they had to haul the lifeboat several miles across land, even chopping out parts of buildings to get through? Saw that on a TV documentary years ago, where they retraced the whole journey with the Army hauling the boat. Amazing story.

I saw the link on the BBC website, it is my home page. I thought of the sea shanties in Richard's The Ocean radio series so had a listen to it. There were some great songs and interesting tales from a way of life that is disappearing. It makes me want to start singing sea shanties. I know 'Blow the man down'.

The same - surprised Hollywood hasn't picked it up and made a movie of it
