Today is the anniversary of the Peterloo massacre,i stayed in the hotel last night that is built on the site of the terrible events of August the 16th 1819,the free trade hall was built there as a direct result of the massacre.I was very moved by this so thought i would mention it.there was a wreath outside the hotel this morning which was a great thing to see that the protesters were remembered,in these times of little or no protest to anything the government do the folk that died that day are an example to us all i think,a lot of freedoms we take for granted were as a direct result of this awful event in our history.

I read about the Peterloo Massacre many, many moons ago when I was a young girl and seem to remember this:
" Rise like lions after slumber, in unvanquishable number, shake your chains to earth like dew, which in sleep had fallen on you, ye are many, they are few "
I believe its from the Mask of Anarchy by Shelley and was inspired by the the events at Peterloo..... I haven't even checked this yet so forgive me if i'm wrong, but as soon as I read your post this quote popped into my head. Events like this should not be forgotten, so thank you Richard for reminding us .

A great poem
love this bit - so relevant to today

'Those prison halls of wealth and fashion,
Where some few feel such compassion
For those who groan, and toil, and wail
As must make their brethren pale -

'Ye who suffer woes untold,
Or to feel, or to behold
Your lost country bought and sold
With a price of blood and gold -

'Let a vast assembly be,
And with great solemnity
Declare with measured words that ye
Are, as God has made ye, free -

Its strange what you remember... I literally hadn't thought of that poem in years, yet as soon as I read Richard's post i remembered that one verse - I remember memorising it when I was about 15/16 when I first read about Peterloo... its quite a along poem but the verses you quoted are, sadly, very relevant today
