That is brilliant...Revie comes across as a total wand, and Clough a total legend..... :D

Saw it tonight.................... very, very good.
Many of the darker aspects of the book - such as the internal dialogues - are left out, leaving a straightforward narrative, although the film jumps back and forth in time as with the book.
Clough's self destructive, bloody mindedness dominates and Michael Sheen plays the man to perfection, all of the cast are faultless, with special mention for the mostly bewildered Jim Broadbent.
Few characters come out of the film with reputation intact, Peter Taylor aside, but this is only a work of fiction based on real people, and as a work of fiction it works very well, with Clough almost an anti-hero.
The film looks suitably drab and the style and locations are evocative. Thankfully there aren't too many actual football scenes - they never really work, do they? One exception where the camera takes to the pitch sees Derby's players basically assaulted by dirty Leeds prior to an important game against Juventus.
If you've read the book you will not be truly disappointed by the adaptation, if you haven't read the book.......why the bloody hell not?

Sorry to resurect an old post but at least I did a search!

Just watched this and thought it was a great film, Sheen is a great actor and a good story. Mrs nows nowt about football and even she enjoyed it.

It was on bbc2 so for those who missed it it could be on the iplayer. Documentry about Cloughy followed.

I'm not a massive fan of films but Sheen first came to my attention in an ITV drama called Dirty Filthy Love (not porn). Where he played someone with ocd and tourettes. Worth a watch aswell if you see it anywhere.

I watched the film tonight & really enjoyed it - even as a non football fan. :thumright:

its a really good film alright, but lets itself down in parts with the casting of some of the more peripheral characters especially towards the end, the geezer who played John Giles was about 6ft4" with a mullet ! for fucks sake but it tells the story well which is the important thing, I love the bit where cloughie tells the leeds players to fuck their medals in the bin as they hadnt earnd em :*:

Saw it last night for the first time and was very impressed.I never realised the extent of Clough's obsession with Revie,i hope it was accurately researched. It was great to be reminded of how it used to be,the pitches, the stadiums, the physical side that's now gone.Loved the swearing,it sounds great if used in context. The rant from the Derby chairman reminding Clough just how low down the pecking order managers really are is more true now than ever.
Colm Meaney was a ringer for Don Revie but that was it for looky likeys.

Watched it last night. Thought some of the football dialogue was appalling. Put me right off. And from way back...

According to Nigel Clough, and friends* of big 'ed from the time, parts of the book, and hence the film are bollocks. What really pisses me off about films like this, when you have someone who was genuinely such a great and interesting character anyway, they feel the need to over dramatise things, bend the truth and exaggerate. You have a great story there anyway! See also Walk The Line.

Ho hum. Adding drama etc. is fine, but not when it isn't needed.

Not a football fan, but Cloughie as a personality was a legend so saw this again on Sun, and the documentary that followed it, brilliant.
Some of the scenes set at Derby County were actually filmed at Chesterfield Town, the ground has had very little refurbishment since the Clough era (as you could probably tell). The new Derby County ground at Pride Park has photos of Cloughie displayed all around the hospitality suite in pride of place. Ches played their last game at the old ground this year, the new one is ready for the start of the season. (Tesco helped pay for it.)

well, haven't read it but really enjoyed the film, thought michael sheen was brilliant, saw the documentary after and his voice and accent were spot on! Having said that I've read the red riding quartet (quite a few years ago now) and have read GB84 (about the miners strike) but I must admit I find I have to be in the mood for David Peace.. and at the moment I can't seem to stick to any of his books, he has a very distinctive writing style which isn't an easy read (and after a day at work, i'm afraid thats what I want nowadays!)
