My cat had to be put down today. She was 10. Naturally I'm upset, but I'm trying to be philosophical.

Understandably, my mum is in bits. She was the one who took her to the vets.

Awww, that is hard no matter the age...all pets become woven into the fabric of our lives and are missed when they are gone. I went to the vets with a friend who was getting her cat put down and roared my eyes out!

It's never easy - pets become a part of the family pack - when the real poppy dog was put to sleep - I managed the stiff upper lip - stroked her paw as the injection was administered - she was worn out poor bugger - just closed her eyes and drifted away - got back to the car and howled like some demented Wolf - frightened Samantha half to death - luckily it was an October evening dark as hell and no one saw me...

Look after your Mum and yourself.

It sucks so much- Last year my cat got ran over by a car and my pet lamb got killed by a dog and i was too late to save it... i was distraught for months - but the best thing to do I guess is to look at the good times you did have and the happiness they brought ..>

Sorry to hear that Sarah. I have a cat too and would hate to be without him.

So sorry to hear about your cat Sarah, it's heartbreaking when the time comes and having to make the decision to have them put down is difficult to say the least. Our dear old cat, Bootsie, reached the grand old age of 18 but had to be put down just days before we moved house a couple of years ago and it broke our hearts at the time, even knowing it was best for him. x

Sarah my heart goes out to you.

Had to get my Jess put to sleep last November, she was 15 and the heart murmur finally ended it.

The feeling of loss and helplessness at the vets was overwhelming, cried like a baby all the way home and then everyday for 2 weeks, when her sister was crying and looking for her around the house.

It does get better in time x

So sorry to hear that, Sarah. My cat died a few years ago now and I was devastated. My rational head told me to pull myself together; it's only a cat. My emotional self grieved for a long time for my beautiful, soft, fat tabby cat that I loved dearly.

It's just over a year since our second cat, Jake was put down.

He was a real cat, one that was playfull, would allow you to stroke him endlessly and never bite or scratch you intentionally. Equally, he used to devistate the wildlife (and unfortunately neighbours pets) anything from a mouse to a Guinea pig or a sparrow to a Kestral.

When he became old and ill it was sad to watch him unable to live as he did.

It was sad to have him put down but I had no qualms about ending his suffering but his memory and fond tales about him live on.

I've gone through the loss of two this past year. Benjamin, our little rock star - skinny and hyper and lover of cashmere sweaters. And Blackie - our Philly cat - big, tough, no teeth, one eye made it to 23 or so.

Lots of hugs to all of you who've loved so much.

We had to have our cat Molly put to sleep a couple of weeks ago. She was 10 and had diabetes. We tried the treatment you can try to provide, the insulin injections and all, but it wasn't to be.

My condolences. Over the years I've lost the three cats I moved into this house with, and I miss them all, but they couldn't have been loved any more than they were and I take comfort in that.

When you feel ready, maybe you can take in another who's looking for a good home, and you'll make each other happy. The three latest are certainly doing the job for me!
