Wasn't saying that, was saying that Liberals act and vote like Liberals so we shouldn't be that surprised about what they are doing now.

Labour talk the talk but that's about it. When they themselves publically said they would cut deeper than Thatcher did, opened up schools and NHS to vast amounts of private money and taxed bankers at 40% for 13 years there is something so deeply hypocritical about what they are not saying that just makes me unable to trust them in opposition.

My mail problem with Labour will always be Iraq though. They act as though it was some sort of blip and not the greatest injustice in the last twenty years.

fair enough, i just wasn't sure, but i am surprised that you keep bashing labour even though the liberals have cut more, and brought in more private money than labour ever did.

i'm only saying they're the best of a bad lot. not shining examples.

when blair was first elected leader of labour, a pal of mine asked tony benn what he thought of blair
"he's all we've got" was his reply.

same thing i think, best of a bad lot.

I totally get where you're coming from Beaux and can assure you nothing I've written has been as any sort of attack on you or what you've said, apologies if it seems like they have :) ..>

don't worry about that old son, this is debate, i expect a roasting now and then !
not that i thought any of it was attack.

i AM being an apologist for labour, as difficult as that is, (even though my only position is that they're the best of what we've got), i'm just not sure if you really intend to be an apologist for the liberals ?

That just about sums things up, and some hope somewhere that there will be some voice that clangs an ancient bell for a better way of doing things than the capitalist let's blame the poor.

I couldn't vote Liberal because I have a long held problem with them, but I can see why people did at the last election - yes in many ways they had a more left wing manifesto than Labour - but what they got was not what they voted for in any way shape or form. There was an issue of compromise required for coalition and in some ways I think Labour opted out, but Clegg had got to the point where he believed his telly performances meant something real and tangible and that he could "call the shots", in reality he has end up as a Tory fag in the best public schoolboy sense.

Aye, they're all pretty poor, but the reality is that however we organise society someone has to put their hand up to try and make things work so we are left with the best of a bad bunch.

God, the things you learn on here! Northern swear words, men in suspenders shagging exhaust pipes and now obscene food. I consider my mind truly broadened.

And Gary, don't agree with you at all about people just wanting stuff. That's not my experience at all. You're obviously hanging around with wrong uns. One of the most insidious lies that this gang of c**ts has ever managed to make common currency is that people don't give a shit about anyone but themselves and what they've got. It's bollocks. When given the choice of doing the right thing or the wrong thing, or having things for themselves or a bit more for everybody, most people would choose to do the right thing.

Don't believe the hype, as a man once said. x

I'm not very good at political stuff and even worse after consuming Guinness, i do respect your point of view Helen.

That said during the riots i didn't see many people looting shops for tins of food and bread, i saw some nice TV's and designer clothing, not quite Robin Hood.

Although i do remember a few stories of communitys helping each other out, like i say i usually stay away from politics, it does me napper in.

You're not wrong. Looking around, is there one of them that can string a sentence together? Where are the tub thumpers, the orators, the people that inspire you to get off your arse and do something?

As for Tony Benn and his comment about Blair, think that was before the man became a war criminal. I'm with Bishop Desmond Tutu and Hot Charity on that one.

And I sort of think that's the problem. We are governed by a political class who've never known what it's like to go short, to drag themselves out of bed in the morning to go to a shit job or to see their parents struggle to give them what they need. Or at least have the good grace to have some empathy with the majority – like Tony Benn, who came from a moneyed background but still had eyes to see the world outside the rich man's bubble.

I think everyone who has had their two penneth on this thread shows that there are still people who are interested in making the world a better place – and gary, that undoutedly involves too much Guiness – even though there are some people putting windows in for bad trainers or drinking sticky toffee milk. I think most people want something better than we've got, it's just the getting it we're having trouble with.

I think Labour are like men – when I was spotty, freckly, podgy teenager getting my heart broken by men out of my league, my mum always said never settle for anything less than you're worth. It's stood me in good stead over the years (am expecting a smart arse comment from Craig, just make it a good one) and I think I am now starting to apply it to my politics. xx

i certainly don't have any truck with blair's behaviour.
i just mentioned benn's comment as being relevant to putting up with hobson's choice.

Just watched Nick Clegg on the news going on about "courage and vision" and how he had to choose between "protest and power". I think I truly loathe him, with his smug, Pilsbury Doughboy face and his posh boy in a pasty shop accent. Need to stop watching the news, it's bad for my blood pressure. x
