My job is an energy assessor for residential and commercial buildings. The vast majority of houses I see have virtually no insulation in the attic. You would all save an absolute fortune if you got them properly insulated. ALSO - a great deal of people are eligible for free cavity wall insulation as well as free loft insulation. I had my cavities filled (phnar phnar!) a couple of years ago and last winter I got £840 rebate from British Gas. Do it people!!

I had my loft insulated at the beginning of Dec, no cavities to insulate though, so will have to see if my bills are reduced!!

It feels warmer but not sure if that's me talking myself into it.....if you know what I mean!!

And grace is just the measure of a fall.

Just got my gas & electric bills which (like many other people) I have been dreading. We have been really trying hard to switch things off that are not being used and it seems to have paid off. Whilst this quarter's bills are still high, they are quite a lot less than this time last year. I know energy prices have fallen a bit, but I think economising around the house has made the difference significant.

I also insulated the loft last year, which really seems to have helped. The upstairs rooms are so much warmer now, so the heating can be turned down.

So now we have loft and cavity wall insulation, all windows and doors are double glazed, and we are swiching off everything that is not being used. I don't think I can reduce the bills anymore. However, I am experimenting with a new radiator and it seems a lot more efficient than the old one. Hmmmmm..I might replace some more...

Cheers, Steve.

Hi Steve
If you're replacing your rads, it's always worth having TRVs (Thermostatic radiator valves) put on. You can alter the temperature to suit in each room with those.

Hi Ticky,

Yes, I have just discovered these in my local hardware store. I put one on the new radiator installed in my Son's room and it does a grand job regulating the temperature. They are more expensive than standard ones, but I will be having them fitted on all my radiators from now on.

Cheers, Steve.

We just got our gas bill, we are over £700 in credit. I fear that when the electric bill arrives it will be for a lot more that that. They don't seem to understand that we use hardly any gas and have storage heaters. We ring to tell them to switch the payments around and they try to sell us boiler insurance.

I don't phone, I write and tell EDF what I want to pay and they always accept it. This never gives them the opportunity to try and sell me anything I don't want.

And if you are in credit by that much your supplier should be automatically refunding you and dropping your payments.

I've just received one of the moneysaver emails and it gives a link to a whole section on the topic of overcharging by gas and electricity companies -
