Letter through the door today telling us of a planning application for 75 houses on the field behind our house - and about ten other houses on our road - we've been expecting it since we moved here 10 years ago...

No doubt with the usual ongoing shenanigans it'll be a year to two until the building company gets the OK from the Home Secretary [or whoever] after endless rejections and appeals and another year or so for the build to be completed.

So that move to Welsh Borders or Northumberland Coast for retirement looks like a goer!

75 houses is a lot of people. I could see a new life for you Pops, becoming a bit of a Swampy figure. Pops the tree hugger! Go on, I'll bring a few dungaree-clad lefty women down to sing songs and make chick pea stew to support you. It'll be a laugh. x

All the towns, villages around here are sprouting new estates - and I just sound like me Dad saying 'eeeee - I remember when all this were just fields'.

Truth is our place is Tory central - and although there will be major opposition - initial rejection of planning locally / regionally is always overturned after appeal by the folks at the top [Home Office? I'm not sure] - it's happened in the past and will happen again.

Sure the Tories loose a few hundred votes come election time - but when you have a majority of over 10,000 - or something near it - let's face it are the MP's really bothered?

So come retirement a move is on the cards - even then we will probably put it off as care for the 'olds' in the family [apart from myself] will still be a priority...

Having said that - this one is a beauty...

Parcel Force charged me 12 quid to send a parcel on a 48hr delivery service & then made me look like an arse by taking a week to deliver it

Well, here's something a bit worrying. The clock at work stopped tonight. The manager taped a piece of paper over it, to avoid confusion, because he's not allowed to change the battery. That has to be done by our maintenance contractors, who charge £150 to do it!

Ol Smarmy Cockswallop aka the "prime minister" over here in Aus has just decided to send 600 troops to another endless "war" in the Middle East - funny he can pay for that and billions worth of new fighter jets, but he wants to get rid of free doctors visits, make going to university unaffordable unless you're rich, fuck over anyone on benefits (basically you apply for benefits and even if you get accepted, you have to wait 6 months before you get any money and in the mean time you have to apply for a ridiculous amount of jobs and work for free)

Basically everyone loses out except for him and his mining company buddies raping the land and Rupert Murdoch and whatever other rich fuckers can buy his ear or whatever he sells

Shit. I suppose I must be the only one who's not so happy to hear the news about Richard's Setanta albums being reissued on vinyl. We've been waiting for ages, and they had to come out right now! After two years on the dole all my income was cut out at the beginning of this month, and no job in view. I've just decided to spend all my savings on a master's degree that I hope will boost my chances (and they're quite expensive - master degrees, not my chances). So I've forbidden myself any extra expense that's not absolutely necessary, and I think vinyl recods fall within the category of luxury items. I do hope they will be reissued in huge quantities and will still be available some long time from now. Just my luck.

Don't be downhearted Colombo - you are taking positive steps to improve your lot, and sometimes we have to compromise on luxuries.

My ex was made redundant a while back and finding a job to meet the mortgage when you're over 50 is hard. He left school with the equivalent of a 50m swimming badge, but after a year's access course he's been to uni and got himself a business law degree ... and walked into the first job he applied for.

I wish you the best of luck :D

So, Labour's pre-conference promises to make them love us are freezing child benefit and getting a minimum wage of £8 an hour by 2019. Add this to their shameful display in the Scottish referendum, being cheerleaders for the Tories and other ragbags of horrors, and what do we have? A party divorced from its roots, probably unelectable, certainly without any principle. What do we do, us progressives, those of us who want change and society organised around the people and their needs? It's time for a rethink, something new to be born. Just wish I knew what. x
